When do toddlers drop their nap?

My DS is 20 mo and is now down to one 1hr nap a day (he's usually woken up to make sure he sleeps at night). Sleeps for c.12 hours a night.

I have DC2 due at the end of July and I'm wondering if DS might give up naps entirely by then? Thinking practically in terms of not wanting to buy a double buggy...but guessing I can sling the new one if DS still needs a kip in the day.

He's always been a nap refuser in the day and CAN get through the day already without sleep, although he certainly still needs it for now. The reason why we wake him up is that he went through a terrible phase of early waking and this solved it.

Just wondering what other people's epxerience has been?

Every child is different, my dd is 23months and goes most days without a nap, whereas my ds who is 4 still needs a nap every other day!

DS is 25 months, sleeps at least 12h/night and has 2 hours nap in the afternoon. No sign of him dropping his naps anytime soon.

georgedawes · 06/01/2013 20:22

DD dropped all naps about 2 yrs.

DS is 28 months, and might need to drop his daytime nap soon. We're cutting it down at the moment, in an effort to keep it for as long as possible.

Envy at those of you whose DC sleep for 12 hours at night. We get ~11 hours on a pretty good night.

Hmm, if that looks like a green heart to anyone else, it was meant to look like a green face. Grin

All children are different but my two both gave up naps between 2 and 2 and a half. They then started again when they started morning nursery at 3 just for an hour but were finished completely by school.

Just to add, bear in mind the heat. I found a sling quite uncomfortable in the summer. I could enter a wet Tshirt competition (would have lost it too) and DS2 was pretty wet too. Confused

My ds is still going strong with naps 3 or 4 times a week. He's 3.5!

RueDeWakening · 06/01/2013 21:31

DS will be 3 next month, and dropped his 2-hour-ish after lunch nap about 6 weeks ago.
DD had dropped hers completely by 26 months.

So, YMMV!

Somewhere between 13 months and 4 years old.

LittleMilla · 07/01/2013 19:31

Ha ha, I think Indith's post sums it up!

Good point on heat, I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm

Those whose toddlers clung on to their naps, were they generally 2 hourers? Just wondering if nap length has anything to do with how soon/late they drop it...?

I don't know. Ds1 napped until late, he has always needed his sleep, still sleeps more than his little sister. He'd sleep 13 hours a night plus a 3 hour nap. Ok so by 3 years old he didn't nap every day but he still had long ones when he did. Dd dropped her long nap earl but would still crash out in car or pushchair or just curl up in the middle of the floor and sleep. But if she had more than 20 mins she wouldn't go to bed that night and as she got older she wouldn't go to bed if she had more than 5 mins! She has just never needed as much sleep as him. Sadly the baby seems more like his sister than his brother on the sleep front.

My 3.5yo DS sounds just like yours, Indith! First day back into the routine yesterday and he was so tired, he was asleep by 12.30 and slept for nearly two hours. Still had 12 hours overnight.

Seeline · 08/01/2013 11:22

Both mine refused to nap after 18 months - even though they really needed it. DS was laways a poor night time sleeper anyway so I could have done with him continuing for longer Grin DD went from having regular 3hr afternoon naps, which seemed to have no effect on her night time sllep which was good, to no daytime naps at all almost overnight.

LittleMilla · 09/01/2013 22:27

I guess I'll just have to make a call nearer the time. And think about buggy boards etc.

He's at nursery 4x a week at the mo and I'm really hoping we can afford to keep him in 3 days a week for consistency of routine. Gawd, so much to think about!

Thanks all
