My DS is 16 weeks old. He is a good night time sleeper, he is usually in bed by 7.30pm and gets up at around 8.30am, with 2 or 3 feeds in that time ( he is EBF) - he goes to bed easily & settles easily after the feeds.

But in the daytime, he hardly sleeps at all. He often has a late morning nap of around 45 minutes, but for the rest of the day he will regularly have 3 or 4 mini-catnaps of 10-20 minutes (usually on my lap after a feed, in his swing, or in the car). However, he is usually happy and alert and it is impossible to persuade him to sleep for longer - he just wakes up! He yawns all the time but other than that shows no sign of being sleepy.

Everyone else seems to have babies that sleep for 3 or 4 hours throughout the daytime. I'm worried that he's not getting enough sleep, but if he doesn't seem to need it, is that ok?

Hi. I have two DDs, one 3 yrs and second is 15 weeks today, for whom I am doing bed time feed now.

I BF both my girls, 1st DD cap napped whilst I feed her and would never have a day time nap unless in car or out for a walk etc. If I tried to put her down she would scream, I would then feed her to settle her and then she fall asleep whilst feeding only to awake again if put her down and like your DS she would go to sleep well at night.

This was fine for a while, so I stopped trying to put her down for a daytime nap, although I really wanted / needed a break and thus wanted her to nap.

However, this all change at 6 months when weaning, as she was not able to nap whilst feeding, so she really needed a nap. Therefore by using controlled crying I was able to get her to have a 1.5 /2 hrs nap a lunch time between 6-7 months.

Have been trying to get DD2 to take daytime nap, but just given up trying as same problem as DD1. So will just introduce naps once start weaning.

So my advice to you is, as your DS seems fine on it don't worry about him have set day time naps, but once you wean him he will need a good nap after his lunch, but be prepared that you are likely to have to use a controlled crying method or similar at first as he will not be used to daytime naps. This is very important if he is going to nursery etc, as he will need to establish as good nap routine and the older and more active he gets the more you will need and appreciate that couple of hrs break in the middle of the day. My DD1 kept up the daytime nap until 18months, and then no longer needed it (which apparently is early), here's hoping second daughter will need it for longer.

Hope this helps.
