Too hot or too cold?

I'm dithering about this, I know I am but please bear with me Wink

DS is five weeks old. He either co sleeps with us using a gro bag or in the bedside cot with t cellular blankets. The radiator doesn't work in our room and I've been using an electric fan heater to pre-heat the room and have the thermostat on it kick in at a sort of luke warm temp.

Buuuuuuut this was fine when the weather was milder - now it's freezing, frosty and there is a draft. I think he's too cold but I'm mindful of SIDS advice - of not making him too hot, or having the room too hot. But how do you actually balance this in reality?

I got flannel sheets for his cot but they're still quite cool when I put him down after feeding at bedtime and it wakes him up. His hands are FREEZING in the middle of the night and I know you're supposed to go by their chests, but they are super, super cold - I've been using scratch mitts to keep them warm. I've seen those sleep suits that are kind of padded like a gro bag - he normally wears a vest and cotton sleep suit.

I'm completely over-thinking this, I know but there's too many variables involved - I can't figure it out! I think I read somewhere that for cellular blankets, you use three for under 18c, and two for over 18 - the room is definitely getting to under 18 now.

Watching this with interest... I'm new to cosleeping and find this so difficult... We have a new build so it's quite warm at night, when he was in his carrycot it was vest/sleepsuit (or pyjama top if over 18 degrees) and grobag now he's cosleeping though I find this too warm as my body heat keeps him warmer, I can't seem to find anything on line to advise on clothing!! Sorry to hijack your thread but interested to hear what others do! Grin

I have found that getting the temperature right is trial and error really. Babies don't move around much at night, so get very cold, especially in the early hours of the morning-have you used a thermometer to see what temp the room is? At the moment-DS (7 mo) is in a long sleeved vest, a flannel sleep suit and a 2.5 tog grobag. Anything less than that and he wakes up cold in the middle of the night. I know that the SIDS advice makes it very clear about being too hot, so I think everyone panics. It's babies chests that need to be nice and warm-a cold hand is no indication of being too cold. We only ever co slept when DS was younger, but he just came into out bed with his grobag on and was All cuddly!
