Too big for crib, too hungry for own room!

DS is 6.5 months and is getting too big for the bedside crib. He bf in the night 2, sometimes 3, times, and also often stirs & needs a quick pat to settle him. So quite normal for his age.

We have a cot in the nursery next door which he will eventually use, but I really don't want to put him in there yet, as it would mean me getting up & feeding him in there, which I just cannot face doing - I'm already sleep deprived as it is :(
Our room isn't big enough to put the big cot in instead of the crib.

Is there any other solution?

we have had exactly the same issue. keep planning to move him into his room then he has another night of waking 4/5 times. have resorted to ds being in bed with me while dh is on a mattress on the floor. not ifeal, but its not forever Smile

We used to have DS1 on his cot mattress on the floor next to the bed. Would that be possible?

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 29/11/2012 21:21

I don't think there's room - the cot is a big cotbed thing, the crib he's in currently only just fits Sad

I might try it though, the alternative is too stressful!

I had exactly this issue. In the end we took side of crib and put feet on it and pushed up against our bed as an extension of our bed. Worked well.
However, at 6 ish months i very reluctantly moved dd into her cot in her room. Same as you, i complained all day and night that I'd have to get up various times to feed, how awful it would be etc. Well from that night dd pretty much slept thru night and has done since. So don't discount it!!

Hmm interesting...! Smile

could you fit a travel cot in and use that for a wee while

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 29/11/2012 22:36

I think travel cots are only slightly smaller than cotbeds? I'm leaning towards the cotbed mattress on the floor at the moment!

Funnily enough, I was out last night and when I got home dh had managed to get ds to sleep (hurray!!) and put him in the cot as he didn't want to put him in bed alone. He ended up sleeping for 4 1/2 hours and I think only woke up when he did cos the house was bloody freezing cold.
So for the first time in weeks, we only had 3 wake-ups last night!!
Has made me think the cot might be worth a try, at least to see whether or not that was a fluke. (oh, and we're sorting out our heating!!) Grin

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 30/11/2012 10:37

That's great Char Smile DS normally manages 4-5 hours at the start of the night before his first feed, but of course that's generally when I'm awake Hmm
I mentioned the mattress on the floor idea to DH this morning so we might give it a try when I can be arsed to move the crib Smile

Ds1 was still waking once or twice in the night for feeds when we put him in his own room. After about a week in there though he started sleeping through, so it wasn't a problem. I think he sensed I wasn't there, couldn't smell the milk or whatever, so slept more soundly. You could give it a go and see if this happens with your Ds?

teacher123 · 30/11/2012 13:46

We all slept better when DS moved into his own room! I won't lie, there have been nights where it's been rubbish, getting up loads, BUT I personally love being able to read in bed again and to not have to tiptoe into bed in the pitch dark, stubbing my toe on the cot!

highheelsandequations · 30/11/2012 15:08

We had a similar issue, moved DD to her cot bed in her room at about 6 months and after a few weeks of miserably traipsing backwards and forwards to DDs room every few hours I moved her into bed with me! DP wasn't keen at first but it ended up being the best way for us to all get some sleep and she stayed in our bed pretty much until 12 months. I know this isn't for everyone, but ti really helped us.

Can you fit a single mattress on the floor in his room?

I've got one in my LO's room - great for night feeds. If he wakes up in the night, out of cot into single bred, breast-feed while sleeping. co-sleep for the rest of the night.
