Moses Basket or Travel Cot with Basinette?

vbab78 · 31/03/2006 11:15

Has anyone used a travel cot from birth rather than a moses basket? Just thinking about how quickly baby would grow out of the basket, then get put in its cot, and we would probably buy a travel cot for when it is older and stopping at the grandparents anyway.

Any recommendations?

Let me know if this is a silly idea. First child and I know nothing!

you could put baby straight into the normal cot

Woull you have space in your room ? Most travel cots/basinettes I've seen are made of a synthetic fabric and have quite thin, foam mattresses so personally I'd be concerned about over heating. You coudl put your baby straight into a cot, therea re some dividers around which can make the space smaller to beign with. Alternatively get a pushchair with a proper carrycot you can use as a bed.

you might find that traditional travel cots are a bit big for a newborn - they tend to like being snuggly and 'closed in' a bit more. we've always used a moses next to the bed and with dd2 we've also had a carrycot on the pram which we use when we go anywhere for sleep overnight. we'd have probably just used the carrycot but we had the moses left over from dd1 anyway.

it's true the moses doesn't last long but you can get them fairly cheap - try second hand and just buy a new mattress (you can have ours if you like! let me know)

are you going to have a travel system or have you considered a carry cot/pram? if the latter perhaps the baby can sleep in this when you're away. they can't sleepin carseats attached to pushchairs (ie travel systems) as it's recommended that they sleep flat - it's batter for their backs.

batter?! i meant better

starlover · 31/03/2006 11:24

lol @ batter for their backs... Mmmm deep fried baby

Our little 'un didnt really like the moses basket, dont know why. But we had a second hand carrycot pram just for downstairs sleeps (silver cross beautiful condition, £5 from ebay!) and she liked that much better. It was a bit roomier than the moses basket, a little deeper, well padded with a good mattress. She is now just getting used to the big cot at 4 months.

I wouldnt buy another moses basket. Not sure where you live, but you can have ours cheaply to try, if you can collect from Sheffield.

I think it sometimes depends on baby, how they like to sleep and their size. I knew we were going to have a big baby so I bought a crib (larger than a moses basket, smaller than a cot) as the cot wouldn't fit in our room. He is only 6 weeks old and is already too big for it as he likes to sleep with his arms spread right out and he hits the sides and wakes himself up. We are now considering buying a travel cot and getting a decent mattress to put inside as the mattresses that come with them are crap. Either that or just move him into the nursery into his own cot but DH is a bit reluctant to do that as the HV frowns upon it. I do know people who have put their babies in the cot in the other room from birth though - I guess you have to do what you feel comfortable with. I do think Moses baskets, as a general rule, are pointless though.

In the front room we use the cot section of the pram (like someone suggested earlier) if ds is having a nap.

Once again, health professionals are acting on recent guidelines and have changed their recommendations. They used to suggest you got them used to their own room asap! Leave the doors open, use a monitor etc... if you want them to go into their cot in their own room.

We used the mothercare travel cot with bassinette from birth in our room until he outgrew it (weight wise) at 4 months. It was a god send and we then went on to use the travel cot until he was nearly two (outgrew again!!)

Would definatley recommend it, ds wouldn't have been in the moses basket for very long as he was too long.

lazycow · 03/04/2006 11:31

We used a travel cot - Mothercare one with a bassinette for the first 4-5 months and then put ds in the main travel cot until he was 9 months old. This is because we went to the U.S. for 6 months when he was 10 weeks old so took the travel cot with us and used that instead of shipping his main big cot.

In the first two months while in the UK he also sometimes slept in his main big cot for naps or some part of the night depending which room he slept in. His room had the main cot and our room had the travel cot in.

We did have moses basket at my parent's house for him but he only used it for about 2 months before we left for the US and had almost outgrown it then as he was a very long baby. Luckily we had bought a really cheap moses basket to leave at Parents house.

lazycow · 03/04/2006 11:33

Sorry I forgot to say that we bought an extra mattress from kiddicare.com to put in the basinette bit so that ds would be more comfortable as the mattress seemed really thin.

compo · 03/04/2006 11:35

ds went straight into a cot in his own room as soon as he came home from hospital. Our upstairs is small enough to hear him. We're going to do the same with the new baby. We'll have a single bed in the nursery too so I can sleep in there if I want

thanks for the advice everyone.

just need to make a decision now.
