help! My 6mnth old is now feeding 3 times a day but will only take about 3 oz at any one time. He will fiish the bottle over the course of a few hours. I also give him an occasional breastfeed. He is also taking solids and has been for about 2 weeks. However his noighttimes are just as bad as before. Whereas he takes less milk during the day, he seems to be quite hungry and feeds every 2 hours at night. Is this normal? How do I get him to take more milk at any one time?

Hi OuiOui, I have a 6.5-month-old who's exactly the same and it's driving me nuts!!! He usually wakes 3 times a night to breastfeed, only to go on hunger strike for most of the morning. This has been going on for the past 3 months or so. I introduced solids at 20 weeks as he wasn't gaining any weight, but while his weight gain is now slowly picking up again, his feeding pattern remains back to front. He does seems genuinely hungry at night though, I don't think it's just a habit.
I've tried to get him to take more milk during the day (by laying him on his back on the bed and hanging my boob into his mouth this worked for a while because of the novelty value I think ), but he usually puked the extra milk straight back up again as he was just too full... So, what I thought I'd try and do is introduce a cut-off time of 3am after which I will not feed him, just cuddle him back to sleep, so that he'll eat a proper breakfast. The idea being that, if I increase his solid intake during the day, he will need less milk during the night.
Do you breastfeed at night, or do you give him the bottle? How much does he usually take during the night?

Hi there , my DD seems to be the same and I also think that it is because she does not take enough during the day as well as a habit of waking at night and needing to be fed in order to go back to sleep. During the day she seems to take a bit, never really cry for food as she does during the night and then look away and be playful after only a quick fill. During the night I try sooo hard not to feed more than twice .

I am becoming desperate for some soloution too ... so will be checking up this thread for some needed advice too !

Hi girls
sorry to have gone a bit quiet. as it's been a while since our last chat, I hope that things have moved on.
In my case, it's a little better.
I've now stopped breastfeeding completely.
However, I've lost count of how many bottles he takes a day. In total I know he takes around 600ml/20 oz but this can range from 5 bottles to 8 bottles. The maximum he will ever take in any one time is 5oz. He is now eating 3 meals a day but will never eat if he's tired.
He sometimes wants milk before food and sometimes the other way round.
His sleeping pattern is also not settled. He always has a morning nap and sometimes 2 naps in the afternoon - oh it goes on and on. Thankfully ds is my second baby or I'd have lost hope by now - I know things settle down - but when???

I don't believe in controlled crying so I just feed him small amounts throughout the night when he seems hungry. oh and I let him sleep in our bed around 5am and then put him back in the cot when he's fallen asleep... All supposed bad habits but when you're tired...

Mine too, snacking in the night. Getting really tedious now, but DS1 was the same. Has plenty during the day but has a cold now and seems to need the fluid to shift the snot.
It is so hard during the graveyard hours not to give in and whip out the boob. Personally I think it is just a matter of being on the ball enough at that time of night not to give in.
Good luck everyone
