Help - baby keeps bumping head against cot bars

Hi, our dd has slept through from very early on but because of a nasty chest infection over christmas she has started waking during the night again. We thought once she was better she'd go back to sleeping through but the last few nights she's been up around 11.30pm until 2am waking up every 20 mins because she's moved and bumped her head on the bars of the cot. According to what I've read bumpers aren't suitable for babies who can sit unaided so any suggestions?

er... when confronted with this problem I did put bumpers in. Extra thick home-made ones, in fact. (she says, scampering away quickly to a dark corner... but then, DS could stand up unaided before he could sit unaided).

Baby bunny has a small soft toy with a velcro strap which I tied to the bar he normally hits his head on, so he'd be head butting the little bunny rather than the bar. This worked but not sure if any of the MWs would recommend it...

Have you thought about putting her in a travel cot (net sides so no bumps) for a few nights to try and get her sleep pattern back on track. Maybe if she's sleeping properly, she will not move about (and bump her head) and you could put her back in her normal cot.

The reason that cot bumpers are not advised is that if the baby gets up between the bumper and the side of the cot, they could strangle themsleves. If you do use them make sure they are tucked well under the mattress and up to the top of the cot.

We've been having a few problems with DS getting his arm stuck in the bars. A small rolled up towel under each side of the mattress has raised to edges very slightly and stopped him getting to the rails for the moment. He's only 16 weeks though, so I'm not sure it would work for older babies

Oooh good idea Adel. My DS is 16 weeks and has now taken to turning around in his cot so he wakes up across the cot. Maybe this will stop him moving so much.
