What time do you think is reasonable for a young child to get up?

Purely out of interest, not talking about babies but lets say the 2-6 age group. Do you have a time when you will tell them to go back to bed, is that time different depending on a weekday/weekend?

Just told my 5yo to go back to sleep at 6:30. Which seems a bit pointless in one way, but the rule is 7am round here. She won't have - expecting to hear footsteps padding down any minute!

PorridgeBrain · 18/09/2012 06:37

6.45am here - youngest now has the gro clock. Both have been up since 6 this morning and have been put back to bed.

SirDoris · 18/09/2012 06:47

No difference between weekdays and weekend in our house. DD is 3.3 and gets up anytime from 6.15-7am. If it's before then we attempt to send her back to bed as gro clock is set for 6.30.
To be honest it doesn't really matter what time she gets up as despite trying everything DS (12mo) is a 5.30-6am boy. Yawn

If it is outside the hours of cbeebies, the under sevens should be asleep, so 6am.

(they don't sit in front of cbeebies all day, it is just a good guideline I think)

6am as that's when DH and I get up for work so cant really enforce anything later. It's a major achievement if even that happens though. Nothing is more depressing than feeding DD at 4.30am and wondering if DS will actually be up before she finishes, even though it feels like it's definitely still the middle of the night.

mamij · 18/09/2012 06:58

Was 6am or earlier, but 7am now we have the GroClock. Not necessarily asleep, but in bed at least.

WhatYouLookingAt · 18/09/2012 07:58

Whatever time they need to get up.

And how is this an aibu?

RedHelenB · 18/09/2012 08:00

not before 5 am!

JustSpiro · 18/09/2012 08:07

I'm one of those awful 'rod for your own back' Wink type parents, so I've always just gone with the flow.

DD was never the type to go back to bed once she was awake, so tbh I use to get up and doze on the sofa while she watched CBeebies Blush.

She's now 8 and over the summer hols was getting up and coming downstairs on her own and sorting out her own breakfast so we were rarely up before 8 (DH and I both work term-time only)...but she'll still come into us in the middle of the night for a cuddle some nights Grin!

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 18/09/2012 08:08

Anytime after 7 is day time here. Before that you get sent back to bed. After that on weekdays they stay in their rooms until half past playing/reading, on weekends they can go downstairs and watch tv while I lay in bed for ages wake up gradually.

But they are 6 and 8

valiumredhead · 18/09/2012 08:48

When ds was 2 it was 5.30am onwards.

At 3 he had to stay in bed til 7am.

Now I have to wake him up! Grin

Startailoforangeandgold · 18/09/2012 08:58

Grin At if CBeeies isn't up neither should you be.

I'm sure I've used that one!

I hate mornings, one of the greatest things about having a toddler and beyond that still BFs is that they come in snuggle up feed and doze of next to you.

Her big sister was never one for early mornings and would come and join the cuddle later.

RowanMumsnet · 18/09/2012 12:49

Hello

We've moved this one to 'Sleep' as it isn't really an AIBU

Thanks

Ohh, I dream of the days where 7am was early morning.

Before 6 is night - no lights, no talking, but I will let them get into bed with us if its after 5am (they are 3 and 1).

But 6 anything is fair game - DH's alarm is for 6,15 anyway. They are normally up before then.

Just means were at nursery for 7.30 when it opens, and I get an early start at work, and leave early. We get the evenings together to play, or go e.g. to the park.
