9mo stirring/waking after 30mins at bedtime

My dd's sleep has slowly got better (touch wood I don't jinx it majorly now!) over the past few weeks. She self settles which is great but is a very restless sleeper (headbangs, cries out etc). She also often wakes up or stirs very actively at the 30min mark (nightime not for naps). She settles herself here too, so not a huge problem but just wondererd if anyone had experienced this?

Do any of your little one wake/stir after 30mins and then fairly frequently at night?

Any ideas why it might be? I often wonder whether she has had a fully restfull night's sleep.

My 10 month old DD wakes up about 30-60 mins after going to bed but doesn't settle herself.

Does your DD settle herself to sleep at the beginning of the night?

What do you have to do when she wakes at 30-60min mark?

I was going to start a thread on this very topic! My 6mth old DS does this too, started about 6weeks ago. He's a good sleeper usually and once down will sleep til 5ish or later. I boob him to sleep then transfer to his cot asleep.

I've noticed that if he's had a big tea he sometimes doesnt wake up after the 30mins so it may be that your DD is hungry/thirsty?

This is not always the case, and the last few nights has started to wake again after a further half hour (so 1hr in total after first put down) but a pick up, rock til asleep and transfer to cot gets him to sleep.

I'm probably making all sorts if rods for my own back but it's a case of 'whatever it takes...'

Very interested in advice from those more experienced mums!

Mine both did this - it would be wind 9 times out of 10. They both had bad reflux too so sometimes it would be that. So I had to make sure they were fully winded and an earlier bedtime would also help.

Thanks Iggly, do you really think an earlier bedtime might help? I have been wondering this too! What would you say would be a good bedtime for 9mo IYO?

This is yesterday's schedule, do you think bed time is too late?

wake up - 6.40am Played in cot til 7am

Nap 1 - 9.45-11.05am
Nap 2 - 2pm-3.25pm
(she usually takes approx 10mins to fall asleep when put down)

Bedtime routine - 6.15pm
Milk - 6.30pm
In cot 6.45pm
Asleep by 7pm

Does this seem to look ok or should I be doing bedtime earlier?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

Bedtime - well yours looks ok actually! My DD is 9 months and her routine is very similar except she naps at 9am for 60-90 mins then again at 1pm for 90 mins. She's asleep by 7pm although I think would prefer to be asleep by 6.30pm but I have a 3 year old too.

Do have a think about the wind issue - you said she's restless at night. Do you wind her after feeds? Does she have a lot of bottom wind? Is she FF? My DD stirs around 30 mins if she's uncomfy as that's the time when baby's move into light sleep so if they're upset, they wake up.

Madallie · 13/09/2012 21:21

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, it may be wind but not sure. I do wind her for a fair while after all feeds but maybe I should do it a little longer.

I'm also not sure but it may be her teeth I suppose cos we had an episode that started a couple of months back and lasted for a good few weeks. It coincided with lots of dribbling, biting down and chewing everthing and sure enough over those weeks ehone by one got 4 new teeth!!! Once they came, this stirring, moaning and intervals and restess sleep stopped for about 10 days. Now we're back to chewing on fists etc and these stirring/cries/moans are also back.

Do you think this is a possibility for stirings and restlessness (even though she's really happy during the day and for naps)?

I know that lots of sleep trainers say that teething doesn't really bother/unsettle babies' sleep if they are god sleepers and self settle!! But my dd does self settle and plus if I have toothache it disturbs my sleep so why not hers?

Sorry for the ramble, just thinking aloud I think. ha ha

Interesting about the wind, when I picked DS up to settle him tonight he burped...

Iggly · 13/09/2012 21:59

Could be teeth if she did it before. Only way to tell is to try calpol.

She probably is so tired she crashes asleep then stirs again after 30 mins.

The wind thing affected my two - but it could be bum wind too!!
