What should I dress DD in tonight?

Dd is 6 months. She woke at 3 ish this morning with freezing arms and hands. The rest of her felt warm enough. She was in a pyjama/babygro thing and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I put an extra layer on her, a long sleeved top when I took her back to bed. This morning she was like a little icicle when she woke and took a good few minutes to warm up. The temperature in our room was 12 degrees when I checked (around 7). It's supposed to be a couple of degrees colder tonight and I'm not sure what to dress her in. Any advice?

I used to use an additional long sleeved popper vest under the baby grow and a cardigan that could be unbuttoned and slipped off easily, depending on temperature.

As long as she is sleeping well, it is better to be cool to the touch than too warm. Resist the temptation to add too many blankets. If she was too uncomfortable she would be too cold to sleep.

My little girl was exactly the same. Her tummy and back feel nice and cosy though, hate feeling those wee cold hands.

I use a 2.5 tog grobag and have been dressing her in a sleeveless vest with poppers and an all in one sleep suit too.

Maybe a long sleeved vest underneath would be better?

12 degrees is very cold - the 2.5 tog bags are meant for temps between 15 and 20. Put a long sleeved vest on and perhaps a thicker sleepsuit such as a velour type one? Don't worry about cold hands, you are supposed to feel behind their neck to see if they are too cold. Babies often have cold hands. If you are worried about cold hands get babygrows with the integrated scratch mitts and fold them over to keep her hands warm (no good if she needs to soothe herself by sucking thumb though)

Thanks. I could think of another description rather than very cold, only it isn't polite! I have one velour type suit, but is dungarees rather than a full babygro (I.e. no arms). The set comes with a cotton hat, but I thought that was against SIDS advice to let them wear a hat so I didn't put it on at night.

I can't cover the hands as she is indeed a thumb sucker. She was a little warmer last night, had slightly chilly toes and freezing arms and hands but woke later than the previous night. I put an extra blanket on her, but by the morning shed kicked it off. Did come for a lovely snuggle under my duvet for half an hour or so this morning :) I'm going to buy her some socks tomorrow when we go to the shop as she doesn't have any that fit her Blush

Are you not able to heat up the room at all?

MaliKat · 14/09/2012 16:55

Sadly not! Else I would, but at least I found a blanket in the cupboard because I couldn't sleep as I was so cold. (We're on holiday in a rented chalet in the mountains. My thermostat is on 16 at home)
