5 month old, any advice on sleep/feed routines?

Hi, I have a 5 month old son who often wakes at 1am and 4am for (bottle) feeds, more often he wakes only at 4ish and will settle back to sleep til 8ish. I know that doesnt sound so bad but I also have a 20 month old daughter who also still has a bottle at about 3ish then wakes up at 6- we're gradually making it more water than milk with a view to eliminating it altogether hopefully by December when I return to work.

The problem is that after I returned to work last year after having dd I was basically unable to function due to her day starting at 4am; I just cant face that all over again so if someone could tell me what you do/did with 5 month old that got them into a good routine of sleeping through, I would really appreciate it.

He sleeps for maybe 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day and will not sleep unless I am with him, so he sleeps in buggy or on us til 9.30pm then I take him up to bed, give him a bottle and he sleeps til either 1 or 4.

Does anyone have any advice? I am so tired that I feel like the 'answer' or plan of action is obvious but I am not picking up on his signals or not making a routine of sleeping through easy for him, which I should be doing.

Sorry this is so long and garbled Blush

I think he is overtired Cagney and helping him nap better during the day may be the answer. I can't do links at the moment but have a look at the No Cry Nap Solution by Elizabeth Pantley.

Thanks for replying Jilted, think you're right and I just needed to start thinking it through properly, instead of just trying to manage day by day as I have been. Tried putting him to bed last night at 7 and he woke every hour or so til 4.30 this morning. I am so tired.

Will persevere with trying for day time naps and a proper bedtime.

Being so tired can be a killer can't it. Our DS was a terrible sleeper and I had to wait until things had improved slightly, and I could think more clearly, before I could tackle the whole problem.

Do you think he may be reverse cycling too Cagney and just out of interest, have you started weaning recently?

Can someone else deal with at least some of the night for you tonight?
