22 months won't nap in bed.

DS is 22 months old. We moved him into a toddler bed a few weeks ago (moved him into a different room so seemed worth a try at the same time.). He goes to bed in the evening brilliantly and usually sleeps through no problem, but he will not nap.

He still definitely needs a nap, but just cries and screams when I put him down for one. When he was still in his cot he went down fine.

Amy suggestions on what to do to get him to nap in his bed?

You can't force him to nap i'm afraid.

My dd was an absolutely brilliant sleeper, sleeping through the night from 4 weeks old. But she NEVER napped, despite my best efforts.

I just had to accept it in the end.

DS never napped in a bed either. He used to nap on the sofa or in his buggy.

We have just been through this. We had this issue when ds moved to a bed.
I just either took him for walk in buggy for 5 mins to let him fall asleep- then came home. Or timed coming home in car so that he'd fall asleep, then carry him in and put him on sofa.
It's probably only going to be 6 months or so til u have to phase naps out anyway. And if he doesnt sleep as well on sofa/ in buggy it shouldn't matter too much cos you'll want to shorten naps anyway with a view to phasing them out.

Damn, looks like there's not a lot I can do then. He'll fall asleep in the car, but wakes up as soon as it stops. Has never fallen asleep in his buggy, not even when he was tiny.

Am 20 weeks pregnant with DC2 so was rather selfishly hoping DS would keep having his nap!

His cot is now in the spare room, would it be silly to try and put him down for a nap in there?

Ah well, I suppose if I just accept there will be no nap life will be less stressful as I won't have to try and get him down.

Thankyou all for your replies!

I'd try back in the cot, why not? What harm can it do :) (Hope he sleeps curled up! Grin)

Have you tried Him falling asleep in the car recently? My ds would wake up as soon as the car stopped - until he was about 18/20 months. Then I started being able to carry him into the house. He just became a more sound sleeper as he got older. I had to come home within 5 mins of him falling asleep. Any more than that and he'd had enough rest that he'd wake up.
might be worth trying again. And perhaps carry him in to his bed instead of sofa.
Or- just try the cot for naps.
What are you doing just now for naps? Driving round in the car?

I live in the middle of nowhere so most places we go are at least a 30 min drive, and he can't seem to help falling asleep when we're driving! If we're at home I persist in trying to get him to nap in his bed, but he's only done it once in the last few weeks, when he was ill. Yesterday I gave up trying, brought him downstairs, and he fell asleep for an hour on my lap, something he's never done before.

Think I'll just try putting him in his cot this afternoon. Luckily he's quite dinky so he still fits!

Yeah when I started trying to cut out naps, ds suddenly started falling asleep watching telly in the afternoon out of sheer exhaustion which he'd never done before.
If the cot doesn't work you could try having 'quiet time' after lunch on sofa with chilled out tv programme and blanket to snuggle under. You might find some days he falls asleep and some he doesn't. I have done this on days I can't be bothered going out cos weather is bad. It can backfire though I he doesn't fall asleep, but then zonks out at 5pm in front of telly while you ate getting dinner ready!!
Good luck anyway, I am sure you will figure out something that suits you.
