when did your dd/s drop her/his morning nap?

ds is very nearly 10mo and sleeps for around 1hr 15mins in the morning (from 8:30ish) and then again from 1:00 for another hour or hour and a half. can't imagine him making it anywhere near lunchtime without a nap, but i wonder if it'll help his nighttime sleeping (he wakes at 5am) if he cuts down on the daytime sleep time.

Definitely time to drop the morning nap I think! Mine only had half an hour in the mornings and around 2 hours in the afternoon plus a full 12 hours at night. Around 6 months old they both dropped the morning nap. Then from about 2years to 3 the afternoon nap was slowly cut down.

fairyjay · 16/03/2006 09:18

Mine carried on with a midday nap until around 4 - very much encouraged by me - I enjoyed that little bit of peace!

gingernutlover · 16/03/2006 10:02

my dd still had a morning lunch and afternoon nap - but will only sleep for about 40minutes max during the day so I ma going with the flow, but at 6 months she still seems to need these three little naps, anyone else LO do this?

gingernutlover · 16/03/2006 10:04

should mention she sleeps all night (touch wood) so no complaints really just always wonder what others do as HV KEEPS on about how she should have "2 naps a day, one of an hour and one of 2 hours" blah blah blah like I can really tell dd that Smile shouldn't moan HV very good about other things

gnl - she will possibly drop to two naps in the next few months. Tutter I would maybe try and realign DS's sleep to one longer nap around lunchtime - maybe 12? just because of the early waking. What time does he go to bed?

Bozza · 16/03/2006 10:31

Oh forgot to answer the question - both mine dropped to one nap at about 1yo but struggled at first.

Tutter · 16/03/2006 13:35

He goes down at 7pm, so I suppose 5am isn't completely awful. But 6am would be so much better! There's no way I could get him through from 5am (or even 6am) to midday at the moment - too long. But maybe I could cut his morning nap down by waking him after 45 mins...?

mine was about 2! He was just awful if he didnt get his hour at lunch time.

Hi Tutter, my 8mth ds sounds like yours. He wakes up at 5am. WE usually put him down for a nap at about 8.15amish...he sleeps anything between 45 mins and 1.5 hours. He then goes down for another nap anytime between 11.30am 12.30pm - again will sleep between 45 mins and 1.5 hours. He then stays up until 7pm (although if he is very grumpy I might consider a short nap about 3.30pm). I've long since wondered if he would sleep longer at night if I dropped his morning nap - but I think he would be much too grizzly. Isn't it ghastly getting up at that time?

Bozza · 16/03/2006 14:06

Tutter what about seeing if you can get him onto 8pm to 6 am when the clocks change? ie don't change his bodyclock.

donbean I assume you are talking about dropping from 1 nap to 0 rather than 2 to 1.

lazycow · 16/03/2006 17:21

ds is 16 months old and still had a 30-50 min nap in the morning and 1.5-2hrs in the afternoon. He goes to bed at about 7pm but does wake early about 5.30am.

We are trying to cut back his am nap so he wakes abit later but he gets so grumpy it is a nightmare. Gradually we are cutting his am nap to no more than 30 mins and he is starting to sleep a bit later in the morning - however this took a few weeks to happen.

I have to say there is no way he could have dropped his morning nap at 10 months old. He had only just dropped his third nap at that point.

lazycow · 16/03/2006 17:23

Also if ds wakes much later than 6.30am on the days I work I can't get out of the house on time so our choice is to spend time with ds in the mornings rather than the evenings and to get a lot of early nights. A 5.30am start isn't too bad if you are in bed most evenings by 9.30pm. A bit dull but it isn't forever.

wools · 16/03/2006 17:28

lol lazycow at going to bed at 9.30....I've started going to bed at 9pm as both my dss are early risers (5am)- but I do feel a little bit like I'm missing out. STill, as you say it doesn't last forever.

jambot · 16/03/2006 19:19

My DD (12 months) still has two naps per day. One at about 9:30/10ish for about an hour to an hour and a half. Then another hour or so from 2ish. Make sure I wake her no later than 3:30. She is in bed at 6pm and wakes up between 6:30 and 7am. At 10 months she was sleeping 3 to 4 hours a day and I definitely wouldn't have dropped those naps. She would have been a nightmare by bedtime.
Apparently the better they nap in the day the better they sleep at night, so I wouldn't be tempted to drop the naps to try and get your DS to sleep later at night. I would just make sure he doesn't sleep too late in the afternoon. What time does he go down? You may not believe it but if you put him to bed a bit earlier, he may actually sleep later.

Clure · 17/03/2006 11:08

My DD nearly 14 months. Has usually gone down for a nap at 11 and will usually sleep one and half to two hours. Until about a few weeks ago sometimes had a nap late afternoon (usually on way home from nursery on the days she was there - must have worn her out!)

She goes to bed at 7 and will wake between 7- 7.30. Have to agree that she has been sleeping better and longer at nights (except when teething or poorly) now she's going to bed at 7 and not 7.30.

Wondering what other 14 months DD/DS are doing sleepwise - especially during day?

snotbox · 17/03/2006 11:10

My ds was 10 months when we dropped the morning nap and it means he has a better afternoon nap and better sleep at night.
