Advice on propping up a side sleeper

'lo all,

My 5 1/2 month old DS has been terrible sleeping in his cot for the last month and a half. I've ended up co sleeping with him. I want to stop this at 6 month when we put his cot in his room. When we co sleep, I use my dream genii behind him to stop him rolling too far away. He will sleep beautifully on his side next to me and sometimes even on his back.

This evening after the mother of all breakdowns from him, I got him back off to sleep lying down next to me and thought I'd try and pop him down in his cot. Straight away he started fussing. As an experiment, I turned him on his side and propped him up with the dream genii like we do in bed. He's now as still and content as can be!

We have a movement monitor in the cot, he's a strong lad but doesn't really roll at all (hence having to prop him up on his side otherwise he just rolls back onto his back) so I'm not too worried about him burying his head in the pillow and not being able to move.

Am I just kidding myself about the safety of this? Should I just bring him back into bed? Am I an awful mother for even considering leaving my pfb

Ds had reflux and side sleeping was a must. We rolled up Muslins and put one in front of him too so he didn't roll onto his tummy. Once they can roll
Alone you can stop all that. It was the only way we got any sleep at all. Ds is still a terrible sleeper but interestingly, the first night he ever slept through was the same day he started crawling properly. And that night, and every night since, he gets all round the cot and sleeps in lots of different positions every night.

Thanks BlingLoving

He slept for a couple of hours like that but then I got lazy and ended up with him in bed. I'll just keep trying him on his side and hope he starts sleeping through when we put him in his own room in a couple of weeks!

I'd just put him back in your bed but that's me Grin

If you're sure he couldn't suffocate on the prop then it's fine. It's only front sleeping which is less safe and he's nearly 6 months old anyway.

Once they can roll BTW it's safe for them to sleep on their fronts anyway.

I have enjoyed him being close on a night, but I have to sleep in such contorted positions I ache so much in the morning!

The thing with him rolling is that he has done it, at about 4 months, but hasn't done it since. He did seem ok last night, rolled backwards but not into the pillow iyswim?

You do get used to it/relax a bit so that you don't end up so stiff after a while.
