Single mattress and 8 month old baby

We're moving DD into her own room as soon as we've sorted it out and we're thinking we might just put her directly onto a single mattress on the floor with it pushed up into the corner for the room and with a bedguard on it. We'd babyproof the whole room, put a thing on the door to stop her trapping her fingers and put a stairgate up at the door. Then at the end of the bed we'd either put her cot mattress on the floor or cushions/pillows if she falls out or for when she wakes up and crawls out.
Has anyone done this? Do you have any pointers/things that we haven't considered? Or is this just a mad idea?
I'm thinking about it as she's started liking to feed to sleep lying down and I don't want to co-sleep so this seemed the next best solution.
She also is quite a roller and to be honest, the cot just isn't wide enough, she's banging her head against the bars trying to roll more and she wakes herself up.
I've even been thinking we could have bed guards on both open sides and she could lie widthways and she then has the length of the mattress to roll about (a friend did this with her DS as he was a big roller as well).

the problem with putting a mattress straight onto the floor is that is its not getting ventilation - normally the slats on the base of the bed allow the air to circulate to prevent mould etc.

also the convenience of feeding to sleep would probably be outweighed by the inconvenience of having to baby proof the entire room in case she gets up in the night and wanders round. I can see your logic, but I'm not convinced that it would actually work, sorry.

actually, I've just seen other posts where people have said it works for them, so I'm taking back what I said!

still would be a bit concerned about the mattress though, I'm pretty sure they're meant to be able to 'breathe'

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. I'm in two minds anyway as when she wakes in the night I think me climbing into the bed to feed her might wake her more. No problem baby proofing the whole room as it's practically going to be empty anyway before she went in

Not all beds have slats anyway - divan beds just have a solid base that the mattress sits on, so not convinced by the "breathing" argument - I expect it would be ok if you turned the mattress regularly.

I've done this, after reading bout Montessori set ups where mattress on floor is used. We get so much more sleep now, I usually end up staying in with him after the 3rd or 4th wake up (he feeds to sleep and wakes every 2/3hrs). He's rolled out a few times, but seems unfazed, hasn't cried at all, just huffs and wriggles until I realise and reposition him.
