Was wondering if anyone had experience on the matter- did any of u try both these methods (dreamfeed=feeding baby whilst he sleeps, gina ford method = actively waking baby at 10ish to give him a feed)? Tried the gina ford thing last night but dd found it very hard to stay awake.not sure how much difference it made to her sleep either, but maybe its one of those things that need time to work!

V interested to see responses to this! I think the GF advice is based on young babies not being able to sleep till 7am from a 7pm bedtime without some awake time and the 10pm feed is the best time to do this.

We're not doing a dream feed yet, DS is 6 weeks old and we just let him wake naturally for a feed.

I'd also be interested in this as 16wo dd is a nightmare to get to sleep so waking her doesn't seem like a good option for us. Tried dream feeding for a wee while but it didn't seem to make any difference to how many times she woke during the night (still hasn't slept straight through) Sad

We did 10pm dreamfeed from early on and both of ours were great sleepers. I used to express during the day and dh did the 10pm feed whilst I slept- found bottle easier than breast for not waking them too much.

loveis My DS is six weeks too! I'm putting him down at around 7pm and letting him sleep as long as he needs. At the moment he's going until about 1.30am then until about 6am. I refuse to wake him when he's sleeping happily, just goes against all my instincts and as I'm now bottle-feeding, dreamfeeding doesn't really work.

BulletProofMum · 20/08/2012 20:56

I never went with either for any of mine.mimwouldmput them down at about 7.30 and feed them when they woke. Did try dare feeds but they stopped them waking for the next feed and they would never take much

DS was a very sleepy baby who didn't like feeding. But could manage an 7-8 hour stretch without feeds from about 8 weeks.. So I decided I wanted that stretch from about 11pm. So we woke him up very thoroughly in order to get him to feed reasonably at about 10. worked for us.

katiecubs · 20/08/2012 21:30

I did the dreamfeed. I tried the 10pm wake up but DS didn't like it - way to sleepy to be properly woken!

Coops you're doing well. We get through to 1am but then get a 4am waking as well. Not complaining as we think that's great for a 6 week old. You can do dream feeding with bottles, why do you think not? We did with DD from about 3 months to 8 months when she slept through from 7-7. Reckon we'll do it sooner with DS.

Did dream feeds with dd from 6 weeks - a breeze and she then woke at 7am. With ds the dream feed didn't make a difference to his sleeping until recently, around 12 weeks. Now he has a dream feed at 11.00 then sleeps until 6. I also tried the option of waking him up for a feed around 10 but that never worked for us :)

We did a dreamfeed, with a bottle, baby happily drank while asleep. It took a bit of trial and effort to find the right time (10.30 worked for us, 10 didn't) and it also seemed to take a week or so for her to realise she didn't need to wake for a feed at 2am. I think she started taking the dreamfeed properly at about 10w, and has just dropped it at 28w, and it generally helped her sleep through - 4am when she was younger, anywhere from 6am to 7.30 as she got older. I;d keep giving it a go for a week or so and see if it starts to make a difference.

ceeveebee · 20/08/2012 22:09

We used to try to wake our twins at about 1030pm for a bottle feed, sonetimes they would not properly wake up but usually did. At about 12 weeks old they then slept from 11pm to 6am, and we dropped the 1030pm feed at about 5 months.

shmuf · 20/08/2012 23:26

Thanks guys!dd actually woke up by hersekf at 1030 for a feed (growth spurt means she's up every 1.5hrs!) So gunna try dreamfeed from tomorrow

Didn't do either with my 2DD's. If they were asleep, I left them to sleep. If they woke for a feed I fed them. DD1 slept through from 9 weeks . We did exactly the same with DD2, she is now 4 years old and is yet to regularly sleep through the night . Grin
