Sleep after bouts of illness

I posted last week about day naps of 17 month old that had gone haywire (thanks to those who replied btw-sorry couldn't return to thread but has been hectic of late!). It turns out DS has tonsillitis so had been really poorly-consequently meaning day and night sleep severely disrupted. This is after months of sleep training and tweaking to combat multiple night wakings, cosleeping, overtiredness, undertiredness (!) etc etc. I feel we're completely back to square one, though I know it's cos of illness. My question is, in people's experience, do things return back to normal after illness is over or do I need to start again? I'm just so shattered-being up at all hours and now DS refuses to sleep by himself after months of doing so (though I know it's comfort he's seeking whilst he's poorly)..

Anyone?

Ok, so after a 4am start (!), attempted to put DS to bed at 9.30. Big mistake. Cue tantrum and ensuing screaming for THREE hours, whereupon he slept for 20 mins and woke again. I think he's starting to hate his cot.

I literally am on my knees and don't know what to do. Should I start co-sleeping again to make sure he gets enough sleep? Should I stay in his room until he falls asleep by himself (which can sometimes take over an hour because he is so distracted by my presence in the room)? He's ill at the moment so I don't want him to cry for a long time (despite this morning's marathon) and this has caused him to get a severe separation anxiety..

Also I'm 5 months pregnant so need to get his sleep sorted out before the little one arrives.

Didn't want to read and run! My DD is only 9 months so I'm not sure I'll be any use....but

She has just had chicken pox ad her sleep has been horrendous. We ended up co-sleeping for a few days as she was so over tired we were all desperate. Things are slowly starting to get back to normal now so yes, maybe give co-sleeping a go for a few days?

Good luck. Hope you get some rest soon.

Thanks guys. It makes sense. I feel so bad cos I've been almost forcing him to sleep in his cot and he cries whenever we go into his room now :( . Feel so guilty..
