Changing from sleeping bags to blankets/ duvet

Ds is 14 months. His sleeping bags are getting too small and need to be replaced. But, his room is a bit erratic on temperature, as is ds, and I'd prefer to mOve him to blanket rather than buy new sleeping bags he probably won't like. He's been sleeping in the heat with just shorts and t shirt and I think he's loved the freedom.

But... He hasn't cracked using a blanket. Is there any way I can help him to figure out how to use them to adjust his temp? Or perhaps I can buy something that's a cross between blanket and sleeping bag? the other problem is that he is fidgety and moves all over his crib at night - one of the reasons sleeping bags served so well until now.

Or perhaps we should just buy extra big bags so he has room to move?

I have just come on to ask this very question.

My son is 18 months and about to outgrow a sleepy-bag but I don't know how to manage the transition to duvet... or if it is safe yet as he still moves around a lot...

I know you can also get sheets from gro-bag which fasten at the sides so that might be useful but I don't know if they are worth the money?

Watching!

I have been asking around too. Seems responses vary according to a) how easy it is to control room temperature and b) how much baby wriggles. In our case, temp control terrible and he not just wriggles but actually hurls himself around. So i bought him a new sleeping bag today, put him in a long sleeve t shirt and shorts and left the window open. Hope it is ok.

I phoned the health visitor and she said that a) the risk of cot death is basically nil after age 1 and b) if they don't like it they'll let you know lol. So i put him under his Duvet for the first time and he didn't fuss at all. Woke up a bit early but nothing new there o.O

He actually stripped himself the night before, got out of bag, babygro and nappy so I think Duvet and jammies it is from now on!

We did a phased transition but it was winter.

Let him choose a couple of bed sets then put them on his cot. Put a summer weight bag on and loosely tucked in duvet. Head on v thin pillow.

The pillow seemed to help him realise were the head of the bed was.

He stayed at grans house a few times (where we introduced a ready bed in prep for going on holiday/taking bars off the cot on return) and we "forgot" the bag. He whinged for a few minutes but he was v tired and soon went to sleep.

We got home, took the bars off the cot, but put on a guard (which we plan to remove after next months holiday) and he didn't make a peep.

He did go through a phase of early waking. Then started to play up at bedtime and occasionally through the night but I think that's more to do with the light nights and the fact he's probably dropping his nap.

Just try it. If it doesn't work for you there's nothing to say you can't go back.

Good luck!

As far as I can recall, research studies on SIDS cover children up to 2 years, so that HV was being a bit gung-ho describing the risk as 'nil'.

Anyway, John Lewis sell pretty huge sleeping bags which my two year old uses.

Son is 2.5 & still in grobags, he shuffles about so much in the night that I can just see duvets being a disaster!

Merino baby sleeping bags

Sizes 0-2 years
And 2-4 years

Because of the material they regulate heat so can be used all summer and winter
