11mo - 530am rise and shine- enough sleep?

11 month old DS now wakes at 530am On the dot. Usual day is more or less:

  • wake 530
  • nap 9ish for 80 min
  • nap 230pm ish for about 30-40 min
  • bedtime 730-8 pm.

He's eating well, breastfeeds and is very active. Lately he's been grumpy most of the day which I think is because he is tired... So am wondering if there's anything we can do to get more sleep in. Or do we just go with the flow... Know it could be a lot worse!

DS recently started sleeping through from bedtime until 530an so it's like we swapped night feeding and waking with early rising! I'm just worried it will get earlier and earlier and I go back to work soon!

Would be grateful for any thoughts. Thanks

Guessing that he is splitting his night time sleep and that the 9am nap is actually part of his night and if one could get him to extend to 7am this would probably move to a single longer midday nap of 1-2 hours.

At this time of year i found it very difficult to resettle babies as it looks like day (I still do find it hard myself...even though the DCs are all slumbering happily).

with my first 2 Dcs I broke the cycle by moving them to the back of the house (away from the extra loud birds in the trees!), changed the timer on the hot water system so the cue to wake had gone and tried very hard to stop them from napping before 11am. this worked for them after about 5 days but not for DC3 who is still an early riser even at age 7 (the good news is that she at least falls asleep instantly at bedtime).

we had moved by the time we had DC4/5 who were naturally woke later and perhaps i was less routine bound by then.

DC6 was a horror and the only way i broke the 5.30 wake was to go on holiday camping and to completely disrupt the sleep pattern and rebuild it when we came home, (don't recommend this way as it nearly killed me...but was not planned.)

Whether it is worth doing is dependent on how much it bothers you and whether you are getting enough sleep.

Good luck

Thanks - that's really helpful. Another 530 rise but we all went to bed earlier last night so feeling ok. DS went to bed around 730pm and woke in a fairly good mood and was happy so I figure he wasn't super tired. He is very tired though by the time 9am rolls around and I'm not sure how much longer he'd last. Maybe we need to start stretching the morn nap later to encourage the longer lunchtime nap and later wake up time..... I have another month before work starts so maybe we can work on it beforehand.

ahh...a deadline, hope you can manage to get enough sleep into your day to cope well. All the best.

We have similar thing, ds is 12 m old, he goes off to bed well, and is usually asleep by 7pm, then on a good night will sleep through to 6, but more usually will wake once for a feed, we tried water, but sometimes only milk will do, he is also breastfed. He will then usually go back down for a bit, but is often bright and breezy ready for the day around 5.30, or sometimes even earlier. He has breakfast around 7, He naps twice and has his first nap around 2hrs 15mins after he wakes up, but not before 8.30, as otherwise lunch seems too far away. Morning nap ranges from 45-90mins, then we have lunch around 11.30-12ish, earlier if he woke early, later if late etc, then he has another nap which usually lasts for 90 minutes, then his tea around 4.30-5, bath at 6ish and then feed and bed.
This seems ok, but i would love him to sleep through more often or at least sleep until 6.30, as i am sure i would feel more rested. I am curently blamimg his teeth, as we had a good week around 10 days ago, and then have had a set back, seems like we are unlikely to settle into a good or less good pattern. Not sure that this is any use to you at all, other than to say, you are not alone.
Interesting what was said above, might go and look at threads about reducing from one to two naps! Best of luck with going back to work, hope it goes well!

Princess, our days are similar... Almost the same.. Except DS' afternoon nap is usually only 30-40min max.
