How much sleep does your 4 year old have?

Ds is 4 and only sleeps for around 10 hours a night - we have persevered with a 7pm bedtime but he wakes up at 5am nearly every day.

I should add that he gets tired in the day, and often falls asleep in the car - which is why we have kept trying to get him to sleep for longer. But I was wondering if we are wrong, and actually 10 hours sleep is normal for a four year old?

Our 4.2 year old sleeps for 11 1/2 hours every night providing he goes to bed at about 7pm. Too much later and he sleeps considerably less and is far less lovely to have around the next day!

10 hours is the norm here too (4.5 yo). Falls asleep 7:30/8pm, awake 5:20-6am.
If he stays up late he still wakes up at stupid o'clock. If he falls asleep in the day he won't get to sleep until nearer 9pm and still wakes at stupid o'clock.

Around 10/10.5 hours here. He has loads of energy and very healthy so seems to be fine for him. A lot if my friends kids the same age have 11.5 though

If he does ever fall asleep during the day we have a late night!!!

Ok thanks. Lots to think about. We also have to make sure he doesn't fall asleep in the day! And I am worried that if we put him to bed later he will still wake up stupidly early and all we will have achieved is loosing our evenings but I think we are going to have to try it!

Bumptious my 4yo is the same.

How the hell do you stop them from falling asleep in the car though?!

P.S. am hoping that school will help with this. A) keep them awake and b) tire them out enough that they go to bed at a decent time.

Goes to bed around 7.30/8pm, & wakes anywhere from 6/7.30, with no rhyme nor reason as far as we can tell. So around 10/11 hrs.

Our twins have just turned 5 so I think I can still comment on this. The answer is probably less than they need. One of them wakes up ping around 6 on a good day, or any time after 5 otherwise. And then she's up. Her sister is far more likely to roll over for another nap. But they do go down easily most nights any time after 7 - having frequently been unbearable for half an hour.

School does wear them out but this makes them unbearable earlier in the evening and has no bearing at all on when they wake up in the morning. 7am is a lie-in in our house.
