Co sleeping with a crawler?

Hi

Ds is now 9 months, and although we don't co sleep for the whole night, he normally ends up next to me at some point.

My question is, now he is on the move, how do I make the bed safe?? I have a toddler guard up on one side but obviously this doesn't run the length of the bed, I of course am on his other side, but the end of the bed is currently open, and although I wake when he stirs, I'm worried that he gets himself about so quickly now he could be at the edge of the bed before I realise what he's up too!

I don't have room to put the mattress on the floor, so am interested to hear what others have done.

Thanks Smile

I literally woke up this morning clutching the ankle of my 10 month old whilst the rest of her dangled happily from the side of my (high!) bed. She's sleeping the whole night in her cot from now on.

Sorry, not terribly helpful.

Haha yes I am envisaging something similar happening in the near future!

We replaced our bed with a futon. Just the futon mattress on the floor.

DD is in a sleeping bag at night, and can't crawl far in it, would that work? Or how about a duvet/pillows on the floor if you're worried, so he has a soft landing if he falls out :)

Lash the cot to the side of the bed and put baby in there?

Bartusmaeus · 06/07/2012 11:27

Ooo I nearly posted this a couple of weeks ago.
We didn't used to co-sleep then I started because I was falling asleep in the chair the many times I got up.
I stopped after a couple of weeks because DS was always rolling around the mattress (whilst asleep!) and crawling off it the moment he woke up.

So, no advice here, I just put him back in his cot and suffered on. We had about 3/4 weeks of awful nights as he crawled/rolled everywhere but the last 2 nights have been ok - he's not thrashing or rolling like he used to so is waking less in the night so I don't need to co-sleep in order to get some sleep IYSWIM. He's 9.5 months.

I shoved the bed against a wall, me down the other side, and a foot board at the bottom. He likes sleeping with his bum in my face tho, so doesn't venture too far down. We only do it when he won't re-settle - hes 14 mths - I quite like not breathing in nappy fumes!

we'll be at this point again soon. with ds and dd1 we put pillows along the bottom for a soft landing and baby gate on the door.

Thanks everyone, I think I might stick his spare cot mattress at the end of the bed so at least he would fall on to something soft, and perhaps move one side of the bed up against the wall (in theory this won't work as its dh's side and he hates that, but he still spends most nights in the spare room anyway!)

I co-slept for the first 3 months, then he moved to a side car cot, then I put the side up on that when he started rolling, and then he finally moved to his own room about 5 weeks ago - probably 90% of the time he has ended up back in bed with me at some point, so I kind of feel that I am going backwards a bit, but then actually I love having him snuggling up next to me so I suspect I sometimes bring him in with me when actually he would resettle in his own cot if I tried!
