8 month old decides to start crying on going to sleep

Recently our 8 month old has started getting herself in a state when we put her to bed after her bed time feed.

Since she was about 6 weeks old she has been put to bed after her last feed of the day and always been fine, whether she was awake or asleep when we put her to bed. But for the last few nights she has cried for 10-15 minutes before eventually falling asleep.

We have made sure dummy is in, teething gel applied, not too hot, not too cold. She got herself in such a state the other night she was sweating.

She only cried for a few seconds tonight, but we still find it weird.

Any ideas?

Thanks

My 8 weeks old baby refuses to nurse when alert ? have to rock him to sleep and then to feed him AFTER naps. He does not want breast before naps ( occasionally will nurse before the nap, but it is very rare). Before each nap he cries to show that he is ready for nap and I will intuitively offer breast ? he will refuse and then I have to rock him to sleep. Do not know whether it is nursing strike and whether I can change it to nurse him before nap so that he does not cry?please help with ideas.

Every night she has got off to sleep after about 10-15 minutes of crying, but last night we had to take her out of the cot as she was sweating because of the state she got into then had her in bed with us until about 10pm and popped her back in the cot.

Why has she started doing this? She has always got herself to sleep no problem since about 6 weeks old, she is now nearly 9 months old so we dont want to undo the good work we have done by letting her fall asleep in our bed.

Last night she went to sleep at 7.30 but woke at 8.30 and wouldnt stop crying, until she was with us in our bed!

It's probably separation anxiety and is fairly common. I wouldn't leave a baby who was suffering from separation anxiety to cry themselves to sleep on their own. Can you just sit by the cot and stroke her?

Thanks for this, well after about 5-10 minutes she usually drifts off without our help. How long does this separation anxiety tend to last? Is it a phase?

It depends, it can last months or years. I personally think if you make them feels secure during this time then it will be over quicker, so reassuring them when they are upset and going to them straight away when they cry.

hardboiledpossum · 29/06/2012 12:23

Also does she seem upset or anxious when you leave the room in the day?

PuffPants · 29/06/2012 12:29

Why don't you go in and give her a cuddle when she cries? She wants reassurance.

rachndan · 29/06/2012 16:53

Nope no problems during the day, not even at nap time, just this 5, 10, 15 minutes as soon as she is put in her cot. But like I said has only started within last 2 weeks, and not every night.

Is it a grizzly tired cry with long breaks between cries? Or does she seems distressed? I was assuming the latter as you said she was getting in to a state but I would react differently depending on what type of cry.
