I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in breast and bottle feeding.

DD has just turned 1. She has never been what one could call a good sleeper and usually still wakes up once or twice in the night to breastfeed, she usually feeds enthusiastically for several minutes, then rolls over to signal she is finished, and can be easily put back in her cot, even if she is still awake.

The past few nights she has woken loads, maybe about 6 times between 11pm and 6am, but has totally refused to feed every time. She screams, I take her out, shush her, put her back, she screams... She is happy snuggled against my shoulder for a bit, but then she starts kicking, wriggling, screaming again. If I offer the breast she shouts nonononono and screams and flails.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy to stop feeding at night Grin. I just don't know how to get her to settle without it.

Last night I put her back in the cot when it was clear I couldn't really get her to sleep any other way. She grumbled and grizzled for what felt like quite a long time then either fell asleep or started crying again (at which point I took her out for a cuddle again). But she didn't sleep for long before waking again.

I thought it might be teething (she has yet to get her first tooth) so gave calpol, but it didn't seem to make any difference. And it didn't really sound like pain crying, more general grouchy crying.

Very likely that it's teeth I'd say. With my dd even painkillers don't stop her sleep going to pot with teeth.

I I were you I'd take advantage of her not wanting to feed to night wean. Once tooth is through she'll settle again!

I hope you're right!
Please tell me she won't be like this for every single tooth Shock. I suppose if I can manage to night wean then that will be one good thing.

Well, my son was rubbish with iirst four teeth and woke endlessly but once night weaned teething didn't seem to bother him. My daughter, well she isn't night weaned yet so teeth make her wake more. It's impossible to say but I found first few teeth the worst!

They really are all different though.

But she could have a sore throat? My dd wouldn't feed at all with a sore throat and slept terribly and in the end I took her to a and e because she wasn't drinking - they doubled her dosage of painkillers and aw improved.

Maybe check throat and ears with gp?

Saw doctor today for 1 year check and nothing wrong with ears or throat or anything - doc agrees it is prob just teething.

She is asleep now, fingers crossed it lasts!

Good luck. Nurofen seems more effective than calpol with teeth.

Maamekin · 18/06/2012 09:43

Well, no real improvement.

But it is definitely teeth - can feel a rough patch on her gum where one of them is breaking through. She went ballistic when I touched it though :(

It'll get better once the tooth is though (until the next one!)
