Not even 2 years old... surely he can't need to drop his nap already?

Ds is 22 months old and wakes around 6.30-7.30 each morning. He goes to bed at 7pm each night but he is still awake now. He's in bed, but still awake and this has been happening for over a week now.

He has an approximately 2 hour nap somewhere between 12-2pm. He always drops off to sleep almost immediately for his nap so he seems to need it, but I can't think of any other reason why he would still be awake after 2 hours in bed.

Does anyone have any advice?

No advice - both my DCs dropped their well needed 2 hr naps at 22 months, much to my horror surprise!
I do think it has helped them to sleep well at night though, if that is any consolation to you..

Ds1 dropped his nap at 18 months.

Ds2 is now 2.2 and if he naps for more than half an hour will be awake until 10 pm.

No way either of mine would have slept more than a total of 11-12 hours out of every 24, however distributed, from about 18 months on.

Sorry, same here. I could have written your post word for word. DS only had an hour's nap today but is still wrestling sleep now. I am swiftly coming to the conclusion that the nap is a goner.

Similarly to your DS tho, he really seems to need his nap after lunch. Goes to sleep very quickly. I have come to wonder whether this is to do with actually needing it, or whether it's more to do with that natural lull/ sleepy feeling everyone gets after lunch IYSWIM. If I had a 2 hour nap in the middle of the day I would be up until 2 am but that's not to say I don't sometimes feel the urge to drop off of an afternoon (hahahahaaaaa, as if that's going to happen with two kids!)

PS mine is only 19 months so I am absolutely gutted Grin.

DD (now 4) needed loads of sleep and would regularly sleep for 2 x 2 hours in the day and another 11 at night right up until 16 months. She kept the afternoon nap until it was forcibly curtailed by her going to afternoon preschool when she was 3 1/2. We din't know we were borrn....

Oh nooo I like his afternoon nap Sad

He has never been the kind of child that can fall asleep where ever he is, until I managed to get him into a routine at about 6 months old it felt like he never slept. Even now he really does need to be in bed to go to sleep (if in the pram or car he will wake as soon as the motion stops) so I suppose dropping the nap will make that easier.

Yes, there are definite advantages to having a no-napper. But, ach, it sucks, doesn't it??!

Thingiebob · 11/06/2012 23:03

Sorry, my DD dropped her nap before she was 2!

ShowOfHands · 11/06/2012 23:08

DD dropped her naps at 12 months and was still up at 9pm each day.

DS is 9mo and his already short single nap is getting shorter and shorter.

My dc don't need sleep apparently.

JessieEssex · 12/06/2012 14:09

My 21mo DD doesn't have a nap on most days, and hasn't for a good couple of months now. She will sometimes fall asleep in the car / buggy but I have learned that if she is asleep past 4pm, her 7pm bedtime is out of the window...

Magneto · 12/06/2012 17:25

Well he hasn't had a nap today and we came home from the park at about half four. Ds is now dead to the world on the sofa, I can't actually remember him ever doing that. I might see if I can get him ready for bed without him waking up - seems likely as I've just sat him up and rubbed his back and removed his dummy to try and wake him and he didn't even stir Grin

My almost 22 month old DS would sleep 2hrs+ if I let him but it has the same result as all of pp's i.e. he's not tired enough to go to sleep at bedtime.

I tried cutting his nap back to around 1hr but it ended up in a horrible overtired mess.

What has really helped though is to push his nap later and cut it a wee bit shorter. The combo of longer awake time in the morning & shorter nap seems to tire him out better & he settles much quicker at bedtime now. His day now looks like:

Up: 6.45-7am
Nap: 1-2.30 (I wake him)
Bed: 7.30

Perhaps you could try something similar with your DS?

He is also one for only sleeping in his cot & always goes down whenever I put him down so I am coming to the conclusion that he possibly doesn't need to nap every single day but just does it because I put him in bed like clockwork at 1pm whether he shows me he is tired or not. He had his first no nap day at the weekend & handled it brilliantly, we put him to bed early at 6pm & he slept through 13hrs without a peep! Won't be doing it every day or he will be a horrible grump, but nice to know we can be a bit more flexible if we want to go out for the day.
