Will a new mattress help him to sleep?

I have a rocking crib that I borrowed from a friend for my newborn DS. When she lent it to me I thought about getting a new mattress for it, but for various reasons decided not to ( I know I should have! ). The mattress in it is a foam one and was used for her DD for less than 6 months, but there is a bit of a dent in it where the baby has been. I'm struggling to get DS to sleep at night ( have posted about this elsewhere ), but he sleeps quite well during the day in the carrycot part of his pram. Putting aside the fact I should have followed the guidelines and bought a new mattress, will a new, thicker, maybe a sprung one help him to sleep better? He is a bit windy/colicky, are there any particular types that would help with that?

Are you sure that he likes the fact that it rocks?

I had a rocking crib for DS when he was a newborn and he hated it! Mine had a mechanism that meant I could stop it rocking and it just became a normal crib. Once I sussed that out he was happy and slept.

It could be the pain from his trapped wind is annoying him, in which case a new mattress won't make any difference. DS didn't really suffer wind, so I can't advise on that.

What age is he? He could be growing through a growth spurt and just be unsettled at night due to that.

Is so hard to know what causes them to sleep/not sleep! DS is 2.5 years old and I still am trying to suss out why some nights he sleeps great compared to others!

Sorry should have mentioned it doesn't rock all the time, tried rocking him to sleep but it didn't work so just have it stationary now. He's 2.5 weeks now so I should maybe just accept he will have odd sleep patterns for a while yet! Definitely think trapped wind not helping, he's been very cranky all day today, especially after feeding. This is after only sleeping about 3 hours last night (well, technically this morning ), yawn......

Oh he's only a tiny newborn! Give him time to find a sleeping pattern. Many newborns can't tell difference between day and night till they find a bit of routine, so he's likely just trying to figure everything out.

My DS didn't sleep through till he was almost a year old! Confused

I'm sure your HV could recommend some drops or medicine for trapped wind, you could add it to his bottles, or squirt it in his mouth if you're breastfeeding him.

Congrats on your baby Thanks
