When do newborns wake up more?

I'm probably tempting fate by writing this but when do newborns begin to wake up more? DS is 13 days old and sleeping for a good 20 hours a day, if not more. He was awake for an hour between 3am & 4am (mainly wind related), awake for an hour or so from 10.30am and since then has slept constantly. If tonight is like previous evenings, he'll be awake for an hour or so from around 9pm. He wakes up for feeds at least every three hours but seems to nod off again as soon as he is on the breast although he doesn't actually snore when feeding so could just be relaxing with his eyes closed.
I know newborns sleep a lot but I thought he'd be a bit more awake by now. DP goes back to work tomorrow after his paternity leave & I know when he went back after DD was born, I wondered what to do with her when she was awake which suggests she was awake more at a similar age than DS is. I haven't bothered getting the play gym or the bouncy chair out yet whereas they were both in regular use with DD by this stage... not that she could do anything with them but they were somewhere to put her!

My DD slept loads during her first two weeks but she did have jaundice so that was a big factor. Colic started to rear its head after that, along with horrid reflux so both of us became seriously sleep deprived until it started settling down around 9 weeks. She is 12 weeks today and sleeping from about 9-7 though wakes 3-4 times for feeding so only sleeps 2-3 hours at a time. Naps are hit and miss...some days good and others hard work.

Catch up on your sleep right now would be my advice...to recover from the birth and get in good hours of rest just in case any difficulties emerge in the coming weeks. But here's hoping you just have a good sleeper!
