At what age did you move your toddlers into their own beds or convert their cots into cotbeds?

My DD is 2.1 and I am starting to think about converting her cot bed. I was going to wait until she showed signs of wanting to climb out but thats never happened and I'm now starting to think maybe she is getting old enough now that she needs to be moved.

I'm interested in other replies so marking my place.

StetsonsAreCool · 31/05/2012 21:38

DD was 2 at the weekend, and we're going to do it any day now.

She's never climbed out of the cot, but I don't think for a second that she'll stay in there without the side on.

We've just got to choose a good time where we can give up our evenings to convincing her to stay in even though she can just get out.

We're putting the stair gate across her door, for a start. At least she'll be contained in her room Grin

imnotsmallimfunsized · 31/05/2012 21:48

My DD was 20 months when we took the side off her cot. She was unsure on it at first but what I did was put the open side against the wall the first night, and slowly every night moved it a little away from the wall within 3 days I was able to turn it round completely.
a gate on the door is a really good idea(I did this too) DD is now 2y6m and has a full size bed(one that bus low to the ground of course) best thing I ever did cos when she hears my alarm for work she gets up and plays while I get ready and we get to have breakfast together before we leave that way

We're in a similar place to KD0706 with my 21.5month DS so am also interested to see replies. He's not attempted to climb out the cot yet so am pained to switch it since he sleeps in it happily & he can't escape Wink, BUT at the same time he is showing an interest in laying on the pillow & under the duvet on our bed & I think he would like one on his own bed.

Stetsons I am also under no illusions about him staying in there once the side comes off & will also be putting a gate on the door lol!

Oh Lord what an apt thread for our house this week.
DS is 29mo - recently discovered how to tip self out of cot & subsequently used it to get our attention by announcing "my jump out of cot NOW!"....thud...."waaaaaaa". So, sides taken off cot on Monday night.
Disaster. He just doesn't 'get' that he needs to stay in bed". Spent 3 hours every night this week plonking him back in bed, no eye contact etc á la Supernanny.
If it ain't broke....

baddyfreckleface · 31/05/2012 22:20

We put dd into a full size single bed when she was around two. She had never slept brilliantly in her cot as she moved about so much in her sleep.
She has a day bed and at first we put it low side to the wall so she couldn't fall out. It looked too much like a cage so we turned it round and put a bumper type thing on it. She slept sonmuch better. Wasn't a big thing to her at all.
She only recently realised that she can get out of her bed when we aren't there but she doesn't do it unless it's morning and the sun is showing on her glow clock.

We're moving DD (23 months) out of her cot and into a junior bed this weekend... [wibble]

Mostly because we figure it gives us a good run of four days to persuade her to sleep overnight again if it all goes wrong, before we have to be awake enough to do a day of work! (And then only three days before another weekend...)

The gate for the door is on standby... But we figured we'd wait and see if we needed it first. [optimistic]

Seona1973 · 01/06/2012 08:09

dd was 2 when she went into a big bed. DS was 2½ years when he moved. They both went into full size single beds with a bed guard.

HMQueenElizabeth · 01/06/2012 08:12

DS is 2.2months and we turned his cot bed into a bed 2 weeks ago. He's doing well, but he falls out quite a lot so we've laid pillows along the side of it on the floor.

HMQueenElizabeth · 01/06/2012 08:13

We bought a bed guard but it doesn't fit the cot bed so we are attempting without.

Magneto · 01/06/2012 08:13

Ds was 19 month when we changed his cot to a bed. He showed no signs of climbing out but I was concerned that the drop side of the cot was working lose because of how much he kicked/rattled and leaned on it, it had definitely started to bow.

He has been fine in his bed, but his lovely jungle themed room gets trashed every single night and he is steadily breaking almost everything in it Angry but on the plus side sometimes I get a tiny lie in while he gets out of bed and starts playing rather than screaming and demanding to be let out of the cot. Grin

HMQueenElizabeth · 01/06/2012 08:14

Oh and he doesn't have a gate at his door (only on the stairs) and so far he hasn't tried to leave his room at all. He sits on his bed and calls us on the morning.

CA2006 · 01/06/2012 08:15

My ds was 18months. We had a stair gate on his door though and he was used to little beds as they used them for nap time at nursery.

Lawabidingmama · 05/06/2012 22:59

Ohhh Reading this with interest as tonight is our first night out of the cot! Dd1 is 2y2mo we needed the cot for dd2! I would gave left her in for longer if we didn't need it we got a toddler bed and put it up today it's a bit disappointing! Wish we had gone straight to single bed! We also started potty training today I must be mental!

StetsonsAreCool · 06/06/2012 21:12

We took the side off on Sunday night. She fell out in the middle of the night and I went straight in, but by the time I got in there she was asleep on the floor Hmm. Tuesday morning DH went in to get her, she was asleep on the floor again - we didn't hear her fall out oops. This morning we went in and she was in bed! Hurrah!

She hasn't even tried to get out, but has cried for us a couple of times in the evening because she's dropped a toy on the floor and can't reach it.

So far, so good. We haven't needed the stairgate over the door because of the Staying In Bed, but she loves closing it ready for bed. Seems it's just a part of the new routine. She also got a pillow for the first time and she's really proud of her "big gurr bezz"

What did you decide OP?

NMM, had to laugh at "my jump out of bed now" - I have visions of him standing there like Superman, all hands on hips etc Grin

Babymay · 07/06/2012 19:27

Hi, thank you all for your posts. Have decided, def. Going to convert her cot into a bed this weekend. Hope all goes well.

Hi I have 2.3 yr old DS who is in a cot bed, we haven't taken sides off yet. But problem is he still sleeps very soundly in a sleeping bag and I'm terrified of removing it! He does nap at nursery with a blanket on floor mat. Has anyone taken off cot sides and kept sleeping bag on?

omama · 07/06/2012 21:51

Neverme - am interested to hear views on this too.

We've put a duvet on the bed, in preparation for switching to BBB but tbh I wish we hadn't. DS has had sleeping bags since tiny & he doesn't like the duvet. He keeps asking me to take it off & he doesn't sleep under it anyway so he's getting cold! He has been NWing since we put it on & I'm very tempted to revert back but I keep thinking since we've changed it we should stick with it & see it through.

omama · 07/06/2012 21:52

Sorry I meant we've put a duvet in his cot, in preparation for switching to a bed.

Liskey · 07/06/2012 21:56

We moved DD to the bed part of the cotbed a month ago and She's 2.6 - She'd never tried to get out her cot ut as we were going on holiday we wanted to get her used to sleeping in a bed. She fell out of it a few times in the first week but has got the hang of it now - we put a duvet by the side to cushion the fall initially.

Plus she's not realised she can get out of bed so will stay in bed and just yell "Mummy, Daddy I awake" at the top of her voice.
