Is it normal...?

Hi,

I've asked a similar question to this already, but I'm not looking for practical advice in this post.

I'd simply like to know whether it is normal (and also to hear your own experiences) for a 12mo baby to wake in the early hours of the morning and not want to sleep (or rather seem to be unable to) for about two hours.

It started overnight suddenly and has been going in for almost 3 weeks. Typically baby wakes sometime between 2 and 3:30, settling back down (with plenty of tired rocking/soothing from dad) 2 hours later.

Does this ring any bells with you guys?

Matt

How many naps a day at the moment. Might have moved up to needing one less or a shorter one....

Hi, yes, our DS2 was like this, he'd had enough sleep to think 'come on, let's go'. Is your DC waking chirpy or crying?

We co-slept and found no rocking etc, just utter silence worked best. We were still physically with him so he didn't scream but basically we pretended to be asleep so he joined in.

It's hard work isn't it?

He has two sleeps in the day of an hour each. Roughly 9am and 1pm. When he wakes in the night he is NOT happy. Unfortunately he can't be ignored because o his sleeping twin brother Smile

Maybe he is missing you/separation anxiety?

Push the 9am nap back, is my advice.

PullUpAPew · 17/05/2012 15:16

JellyMould to what end though? I don't see the connection between a 9am nap vs a 10am and waking up screaming in the early hours or not.

Is he showing any signs of teething? Around this age the 1yr molars are coming through which can be quite painful. IME unhappy crying/screaming at that time of night was usually discomfort (teething). Whereas if DS was awake for a long time & happy/chatty/wanting to play then that would be more of an indicator that routine was to blame & he might be undertired. Either because he's getting too much daytime sleep, or he's not awake for long enough before bed. How long are his naps? And what time does he go to bed?

WRT JellyMould's suggestion, I've not come across long night wakings being caused by too early a morning nap, the usual result of that is early waking. That said, I do think JM has a point that the morning nap is probably too early at this age.

We've had some odd phases of strange early hours behaviour on and off from about 10mo and DD is now nearly 14mo. She is usually grumpy but not screaming. I've put it down to developmental weirdness and occasionally a bit of teeth.
