Dropping to one nap around 9 months

now I remember my son did this at 10 months and was totally down to one nap by 12 months, so I would expect my dd to follow suit. But she's trying to do it already at 9 months.

She is streching out the gaps between sleeps so much that I am struggling to get her to have 2 naps in 12 hours.

Today was a bit messy with a 6:40 wake up, a nearly 2 hour nap between 10:50 and 12:40, a late half hour nap in the car at 4 til 4:30 and then a late bed of 8:30

Usually she has a 12 hour night.... But with loads of wake ups ( still feed her or pick her up.... O dear).

Hs anyone else experienced it this early? I'd kind of expect it in a month or so but not yet!

So it's really a case of one nap not enough and two is too much.

Any advice for me?

Today she got up at 7:30, napped 11 to 12:30, was out and about in pram in the late afternoon but no nap so bed at 6:30, but she thought it was a nap and got up half an hour later... I tried to get her back to sleep but my son interrupted and so she is still up - all evening.

It's not normally this bad. But she can last 4 hours between naps and so cant really fit two into a 12 hour day.

What should I do? Grin and bear it?

my 9 month old has been napping only once per day for ages, so I don't think its that unusual, although he gets really grumpy from around dinner time/late afternoon etc so i just put him in bed early if he is like that (6.30ish) if he naps twice he will be up all night so i rather just let him have the one nap.

although like yours he has woke up now after going to bed at 6.30, so he is sat down here with me! but thats cos ds2 made too much noise and woke him up

Oh thanks - well maybe dropping to one nap might help her night?

I thought ten months was early!

I am encouraged.

Just to say I thought mine was dropping to one at about then, but I tried her on one nap for a few days and it was a nightmare from about day 3. I persisted with the fights over two naps but after another week it so everything got much easier again for a few months. She properly dropped the morning nap at 12.5 months. it was really different second time round, she lasted til late morning easily and though we struggled with her being tired in the evenings for a couple of weeks there were no melt-downs, 4am mornings and naps at 8am.

Basically, I'd say it's clear some babies do it, but if it all starts going belly up I'd go back to two for a bit, for your own sanity, even if it's a bit of a battle ground.

Good luck!

I'm interested in this thread as DD just 10m seems to be dropping her morning nap, however she's being very resistant at all sleep times so finding it genuinely hard to judge if she really doesn't need it. Is it normal for babies to go down to one nap this young?

Tertius · 21/05/2012 17:05

My first did. And looks like my second will also. Since I feed her to sleep or use the pram I can tell she really isn't tired enough until 4 hours have passed in the am and 3 in the pm which then knocks bedtime on late....

I think am going to have to roll with it for now... I can't get her to sleep sooner. By 10.5 months my son had started to drop to one nap and was totally on one by 12 months.

And it's not normal - It's early. But not unheard of!

Well she is doing my head in! Today up at 7:20, napped 11:20 to 12:40 and 3:30 to 4:30 but wouldn't go to bed til 9:30.... So i am cutting that second nap down now... I really hate waking a baby though. Especially one who didn't nap much! Any ideas anyone?

Feels like a nap transition to me.

I think she is too young but today she got up at 7. Wasn't tired til 11 but we were out so we had an early lunch and she kept going til 12. Then had a 2 hour nap. But exhausted by 7 and woke up five minutes after I put her down so I wish I had put her to bed early.

Seems too young to me but I can't make her take two - and if she does she loses more sleep by being up late....

My 9 month old has just had two days of one nap a day...totally resisted morning nap (I feed to sleep) both days. I think 9 months is young but his total nap sleep has been the same, both days he's extended the one nap to two hours...second nap would have been just over an hour on two naps a day. Today he went down at about 12.30 after waking at 6.30 and he was absolutely fine with that...then woke after an hour and I fed him back down and he didn't wake until just before 3. Then went to bed with no problem at 7.

I often find books etc saying 12 months is average to drop to one so there must be lots dropping to one before that to make it average??? ds1 was 14 months, but thinking back ds1 only had around 1.5 hours in total a day with two naps....ds2 is having more than that with one. I can't force a nap, nor would I want to, so I'm just going with it as he's perfectly fine and dandy.

Not sure if any of this helps. I also know a 10 month old on one nap a day of two hours who has been doing this for some time.

Tertius · 23/05/2012 21:23

Thank you, it does help!

My ds had lower sleep needs than my dd but he was unwell a lot at this age so his nap dropping happened later... Partly why i am so surprised.

I also feed to sleep or use the pram. At least that way you don't get awful crying fights!
