Rolling stopping ds sleeping

Ds2, 7 months old, has never been a great sleeper. He was swaddled up until 2 weeks ago when we went cold turkey, in a grobag, and sletp him on his tummy. He took to it brilliantly, and while his sleep still isn't brilliant, it was miles better. We could put him down awake on his tummy for naps and he would go to sleep without a problem. Nights are different, but that's a whole different thread.

This week, he's just learned to roll from front to back, and now when I put him down for a nap, he just can't help but roll onto his back, where he can't sleep, bangs his head against the side of the cot and gets upset.

He was such a good napper for the last two weeks that I'm so rustrated by this rolling business. I have been holding him on his tummy while shush/patting his bottom until he falls asleep but it's not ideal as he gets really irate (understandably!), and then doesn't sleep well cos he's basically upset himself to sleep Sad.

Anyone got any advice about how to keep him on his tummy or else an easy way for him to learn to sleep on his back? Thanks in advance.

This happened to us, although my DS is a bit younger than yours. He's also a tummy sleeper and around the time he learned to roll he could not help but do it every time I tried to put him down to sleep. I just kept turning him back over again but it did take AAAGES to get him off. Don't think you can do anything about it, mine stopped after a week or so and now only does it now and then, I should think it would be the same for you!

Yep, ds is a bit of a late developer as far as movement is concerned - he's a big boy, so I'm putting it down to excess weight holding him back Grin.

I'll keep persevering then, in the hope he'll realise that rolling in bed is bad! Thanks for your reply.

Ds learnt to roll early and it made little difference to his sleep as he was still swaddled. But he is now 8 months and learning to crawl and i get woken up 3-4 times a night by wailing cos hes got himself stuck in a corner...sometimes he is still asleep. I'm just waiting it out cos we had a similar episode a while ago when he learnt to commando crawl and it stopped after about 4 nights.

Good luck!

Pad the cot with bumpers all the way round to stop then waking up so much

We are on day 3 i believe, though 7 months of sleep deprivation is seriously messing with my memory, so could be one more or less, who knows. Still no progress, totally rubbish naps today.

Will have a go at the bumpers thing. Not sure it'll stop him rolling, but at least it will definitely stop him banging his head on the cot!

Thanks for replies.

Mine was the other way (back to tummy) and about 4 mo, but it took her 8 weeks. For us it was only at night. Ugh. I stopped rolling her back after about 6 weeks. That helped actually, sometimes she resettled on her tummy. Good luck!

could you put a teddy either side of him so he can't roll, much as you would to stop a sleeping baby rolling from its back onto its front? Or is it considered unsafe to do that?

lookout · 14/05/2012 12:31

fifi, I'm coming to the conclusion that I might have to just let im get on with it, much the same as you left her to resettle. Not that keen on doing that right now though as he has a cold, which, come to think of it, might be why he's not so happy on hhis tummy atm...

fhdl34, it's probably considered unsafe, but seeing as he's a monstroulsy big boy, he'd probably roll right over them Grin
