Sleep apnea alarms and Anna Wahlgren

I have just come across Anna Wahlgren's website. She apparently advises sleeping on the front using a sleep apnea alarm to prevent the risk of cot death (I think, not that I have read the book). Ignoring the advice about sleeping on the front, I was wondering if anyone has used the apnea alarms? They sound very sensible to me, as cot death can still happen even if the baby is on their back. Is there any reason why they are not in common use?

Has anyone read the book? I have used her method of buffning (in swedish) to get a baby to sleep - it works!

Sleep apnea alarms are not in common use because they tend to have far too many false alarms. This can increase panic, or lead to complacency, or simply result in people giving up on them.

I know you said, 'ignoring the advice about sleeping on the front' but I wouldn't trust any self proclaimed expert who advised this on anything else they said. And surely it's better to follow safe sleeping advice than rely on an alarm to pick up a problem. After all, the alarm is going off because your baby isn't breathing.

If you are talking about monitors such as the Angelcare sound and Movement monitor I think they are being used quite commonly. The number of (excellent) reviews on the likes of amazon and boots would suggest so anyway. We love our Angelcare as do many of our friends and I don't know anyone who's had a false alarm. We found it particularly reassuring when DS decided to sleep on his front from 3.5 months. We tried to roll him back but he would just flip himself back on to his front. Incidentally he started sleeping so much better on his front.

We use movement alarms and I find them helpful. Never had a false alarm and we use as well as FSIDS guidelines.
