Sleeping bag tog

I went to John Lewis to buy a Grobag today for imminent DC1, and was taken aback to find the whole display filled with 1 tog bags. According to the temp/tog chart, they're for temperatures above 20 degrees, which it certainly isn't right now in my house and rarely ever is at night, even in 'high summer'. The JL advisor said they hadn't got any 2.5. Tog ones out because of the 'change of season'. This seems a bit mad. I know I can just buy them online, but am I missing some important logic? Is there a reason why 1 tog is a better buy right now?

no and thats odd, my john lewis always has a selection of both tog ratings!

Glad it's not just me! I would have guessed that 1 tog bags are generally of limited use in the UK, but then started to worry that I was going to bake my baby.

I use 2.5 togs all the time abd just vary clothes!

I bought Bambino Merino ones. The initial cost is higher, but they work out much cheaper. There is no TOG, the merino wool is breathable, so warm in winter, cool in summer. Also they come in one size 2-24 months, so you don't need to keep replacing them.

A pair of Bambino Merinos is all you need (one for the wash and one to wear).

FYI TK Maxx sometimes stocks gro bags at half the price.

My house is quite warm and my DD's room is usually 21 degrees. In the winter months when the temperatures drop alot during the night we use a 2.5tog. I got my DD's 1tog out in March during the warm week but we are back to using the 2.5tog again.

I think that in most centrally heated houses in the UK, either tog would probably be ok. But it depends on your house. My friend lives up the road and her DD's room is never above 18 degrees so she sticks to a 2.5 tog.

harverina · 06/05/2012 20:59

Yeah agree about TK Maxx...thats where we bought my DD's bags.

Thanks all, it's great to have advice. I don't know how these small things become so mind boggling. TK Maxx also had a huge rack of 1 togs, but in their case I assumed that had more to do with the more random nature of their stock. I hadn't heard about merino, so will look into that, thanks Nancerama.

Oh I know...every little decision becomes a huge decision that takes lots of deliberation! But its only natural :)

How are babies expected to sleep in 1 tog duvets. I have just changed mine from a 10 tog to a 4.5 tog.

5madthings · 10/05/2012 22:40

the baby sleeping bags are diffent to adult duvets, it works differently i remember asking and getting an explanation but i dont remember it!

a baby would overheat with a normal duvet, its grobags or sheets/blankets and so many layers or blanket according to the temp.

i have used the 1 tog grobags in teh summer when its warm but our house is very warm anyway, but it does need to be properly warm for a 1tog grobag :)
