17 week old doesn't stay awake for long, bit worried.

So, my 17 wee old can only seem to stay awake for a maximum of 1.5 hours and often he wakes from his nap and is yawning his chops off after half an hour. I'm getting a bit worried as I think he should be staying awake for longer. He also naps for quite long periods. This morning he woke at 6.30, napped from 8 til 10am with me resettling him after 45 mins. He then fed at 10.30 and was giving all his sleepy cues by 10.50 and I've just put him down again. He will probably sleep another 1.5 hours with me resettling him half way through as he always wakes crying and goes back off easily. Should I be concerned about this, or is this quite normal? Advice please! Thankyou.

Does he still sleep well (as in, what would be expected with regressions around his age)? Does he feed well? Is he gaining weight?

If so, it's probably his way at the moment - enjoy the snuggles and the peace! /he's still so little.

Mine is 19 weeks and he often has sleepy days.

Oh yes totally normal!!!

Of course not all babies do this but just tuning into the world around him is enough to tire at this age. They are taking in so much and processing so much when awake that a frequent good sleep is vital.

Definitely don't worry, and definitely make the most of it, as it certainly won't last! Grin

I wouldn't be overly worried if he's feeding well, regularly, and gaining weight.

My dd could not stay awake for longer than around an hour for months and months! I asked the health visitor about it as I was bit worried. Hv told me to be delighted that I had a good sleeper! My dd is nearly 3 and still has a nap in the afternoon, I think she's just like that. She's always (after bout first 9 weeks) been a great sleeper.

I'm 39 weeks preg with number 2 and hoping for another great sleeper!

Ask Hv for advice to put your mind at rest but it sounds normal to me :-)

Thanks everyone, that is so reassuring! He feeds really well and is gaining weight. When he is awake, he is really alert and into everything and is also working on rolling over so that might have something to do with it. Time to put the kettle on and enjoy it whilst it lasts! Thanks again.

Yes - I think so long as he is alert when awake and not lethargic or disinterested you have struck baby gold!! Lucky you Envy
