My ds practically never sleeps for more than 45 minutes during the day. I read some of the no-cry sleep solution which suggested carrying on what you were doing to get them to sleep just before you think they're going to wake up but even if I've been doing the exact same thing for the entire time and continue after he wakes (I.e in the buggy, in the sling or on the bed with dummy) then he still always wakes up with huge open eyes and wanting to smile and talk. I don't necessarily mind and he's a lot better at night (touch wood!) waking about every 3 hours but I've read that long naps are important for their health. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions/support/advice really..?

Hi, my DS was exactly like this only he woke up very grumpy, it's really commen actually. The sleep cycle lasts for 45 mins after which they enter a light stage of sleep and wake up. It took him until about 6 months before he went longer than 45 mins and then he would go 1 1/2 hours (2 sleep cycles)- don't think there is much you can do about it really. I found that puttinghim down for naps in his room and closing the blinds making it dark helped though.

Perhaps he isn't tired enough for a longer nap?? Could you perhaps keep him up 10-15 mins longer?

What nobhead said is totally right. My Ds1 did this and Ds2 also does (he is 14 wks) nothing o have tried works except if I am out in the car or pram at the lunchtime sleep. Weaning helped for Ds1 am hoping it will again. Don't keep him up longer he'll get grumpy and overtired and sleep less probably Smile

Ok thanks. Glad to know he's not the only one!

My DD did this and was having 4 naps a day as she could only cope with about 2 hours awake time inbetween.

I didn't want to sleep train her so I just went with it, she is now 6 months old and has grown out of it without me doing anything! She now has 2 or 3 naps but often does over an hour.

Glad this isn't just me, my 16wk DD only naps for 30-40 minutes at a time, doesn't matter whether she's sleeping on me or in the crib (she feeds to sleep, hence the sleeping on me). She always wakes up bright eyed and ready for action and doesn't get tired again for another 2-3 hrs. She sleeps through though so I'm going with it and trying to not force anything she doesn't want for fear of breaking her nighttime habits. I'm aware 4 month sleep regression is looming and am dreading it as I have become accustomed to getting my sleep again.

My DS is just over four months and the same- has four 45 minute naps during the day. Bit of a sleep regression thing going on at night which we'd better gloss over(!) but tbh isn't that bad and always goes straight back to sleep.

He seems happy with it, which is all that matters, and I'm sure he'll take longer ones as he gets older/weans/crawls, etc. Wouldn't worry about it!

my LO is the same, only sleeps for 40 mins at a time unless I take her for long walks in the pram when she'll sleep for 2 hrs! My LO does prefer light music or the t.v to get her to sleep which sometimes keeps her asleep for longer periods but this is rare! LO doesn't sleep through the night either so she can be pretty grumpy coz she's overtired from sleep deprivation!

As long as he isn't grumpy with it then I wouldn't worry about it, I'm holding onto to weaning and age for it all to get better! :-)
