Too big for Moses basket, but cot won't fit in our room!

My LO is 15 weeks and quite a chunk - his head is now right at the top of his Moses basket and I can't see him in it for much longer. I'm keen for him to stay in our room until 6 months as per advice regarding SIDS etc, but we have bought him a cot bed that is pretty big and won't fit in our room. What has anyone else done in this situation? Do I move him into his own room and ignore the advice? Would a smaller travel cot be ok in the interim? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Well mine were in their own rooms from day one but could you fit a single bed in there and sleep in the babies room?

snala · 18/04/2012 09:11

Could you get a crib? They are longer but not much wider so won't take up much space? Smile

We bought a crib, almost a small cot from Kiddicare and it didn't take up much more space than a Moses basket. IIRC it was only about £40 and my DN , 98th percentile, fit in it up to 6 months.

For exactly the same reason, my DS1 was in his own cot/room at 6 weeks. I had a comfy chair in there for night feeds etc.

Watching with interest as we will be in the same situation in a few months!

We had a crib - it was brilliant and lasted until DD was just voer 6 months. In fact we've still got it gathering dust in the garage, must find a good home for it.

I'm having a similar situation only the problem is ds is now 7 months and wont go to sleep anywhere but the moses basket. We have had to put the moses basket in he cot bed as I'm worried it will topple because he's enormous...

I don't know what to do.

scrumdiddlydoo · 18/04/2012 09:41

A crib sounds like it might be a good plan - just didn't want to waste money if he ends up going in his cot soon anyway. Will have a look on Kiddicare - let's just hope he sleeps in the thing if I buy one! I hadn't thought about the basket toppling over, but now you mention it Schrodingers, this sounds like it could be a distinct possibilty as he is a strong lad and getting to rolling stage!

Does a cot totally not fit in your room? The reason I ask is that there are actually very few rooms where a crib will fit but not a cot. Of course, you may be one of the unlucky few, but we found that thinking a bit differently about whether furniture 'would fit' was the solution for us. Granted I now have to crawl to the end of the bed to climb out the bottom and can't get out my side, but the cot does 'fit' and it's not for long.

Just a thought. As I said, it may totally and utterly not fit, in which case ignore me Grin.

scrumdiddlydoo · 18/04/2012 09:55

Lol Youlaugh, the problem is we have fitted wardrobes and short of removing our double bed, there is no way the cot is gonna fit. A crib may not fit either then? Looks like I may have to do some measuring and possibly rethink! Maybe I'll just move the cot into the lounge and sleep on the sofa!

Fair enough then! I only ask because I have heard lots of people angst-ing in real life that the cot 'doesn't fit' when they mean it in a 'the room won't look nice and it's a bit awkward' or 'I don't want to move the chest of drawers into the baby's room' kind of way. Fair enough if a person doesn't want to do those things and would rather have the baby in his/her own room, but I have less sympathy for endless agonising. If we're dealing with 'short of ditching the bed it doesn't fit' then that's rather different!

Cribs are narrower than cots (as others have said) so a crib may fit. Do measure up first though!

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 18/04/2012 10:59

YoulLaugh OP said cot bed, not cot - cot bed is larger both ways. Was yours a cot?

laracroft2001 · 18/04/2012 11:53

I was in same situation and moved dS to own room at 8 weeks. He is 19 weeks now

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 18/04/2012 13:58

Ah yes, sorry I didn't notice it was a cot bed. Those are bigger. I would have suggested changing it for a cot if it made a difference and the OP was keen to keep the baby in her room, but given her follow up I doubt it has much effect.
