Toddler + wind = wake ups

ok. DD 20mo. Never slept through. Since birth she has slept a solid five hours twice at about 9months and 7pm - 1 am twice on consecutive nights about six weeks ago.

We have no idea what does or doesn't help, we have tried many many things, cutting out various food (dairy/soya intolerant since birth, bananas and dried fruit are a no no as well) we have played around with naps, we have played about with timing of meals, with amounts, we have tried different sleeping bags and fleece jumpsuits, we have tried night lights, comfort toys, varying temperatures etc. But every night between 10-11pm she wakes screaming, farts a few times, and goes back to sleep. On us. Never ever will settle back in her cot.

I am now at the point where I need advice to help ease these tummy troubles, I won't let her CC/CIO as she can scream non stop for five hours in my arms so can't imagine her doing that alone.

She has just woken. 22.15. That's less than three hours DH and I have had alone, we need to sort out life, holidays, watch a film, I need to write up a research project etc etc, and as i co sleep after her first wake up I want to go back to sleeping with my husband not a writhing toddler who refuses to sleep!

Thank you in advance.

Always wind?

How long have you tried cutting out food stuffs? She sounds like ds with his tolerances. Foods like green veg are bad, carrots Confused too.

Best thing we can do is give peppermin/fennel or camomile tea between tea and bedtime. Fennel is usually the best for getting out any trapped wind. Also a smaller tea with no fruit or veg like peas or brocolli. We make a cup of the tea and put a few teaspoons into a few ounces of water and get him to drink it all (or with his dinner). He'll usually then trump away in the bath. We've had spells where he'd wake at night with wind and would give some tea again which helped. We'd make the tea up beforehand so easy to administer.

Try cutting foods again but you need to give a week or so. If she's fussy with veg then don't force or hide them - we've found that the veg ds doesn't eat are the ones that give him problems!

Ds is 2.6 now and is much better. Still windy but is outgrowing his dairy intolerance (he can eat yoghurt and cheese now) but rarely wakes at night with bad wind. We also have him in a bed and have a foam cube bed that we use to lie next to him and resettle him. That got him used to staying in his room.

Thank you for the response, we give it 10-14 days after cutting something out, we are currently in an avoid onions phase, but it could possibly be teeth at the moment.

I will give the teas a go, I did give DD some banana today with oatmilk to see if she would handle that better - but the verdict is a resounding and quite loud farty no.

Reading wth interest, as my 4mo has just started sleeping appallingly, waking up 5m after being put down, with coughy (windy) sobs. It's driving me mad.

Given dietary issues with her older brother, I don't want to wean early or stsrt giving teas, etc. However, intersting to note the use of fennel: my beloved gripe water contains fennel!

OP we deliberately keep DS's diet quite plain until he got to 2. So no onions, leeks or anything that causes wind - same for pulses, certain fruit and veg etc. any slip ups eg eating at a friends house and we'd know about it!

Reading this with interest too. My 14 month old has been the same for the last few months. Think the trapped wind could be connected to teething, but a bit hard to tell as she's only got 3 and a bit teeth so far.

It's awful when she wakes up with wind. Hubby and I can spend 2 hours in the night massaging her tummy and cycling her legs. And then her sleep, which has never been brilliant, is well and truly messed up for the next few weeks.

Good idea re: camomile/mint tea. Hadn't thought of that. We've been giving Infacol and/or Dentinox, even though I guess they are really meant for younger babies.
