'overtiredness' could someone please explain?!

I just get my head around how this works. I know it occurs and in fact have the problem with ds2 (poor napper) and myself (bloody exhausted!) But why does it happen? Surely the more tired and sleep deprived one is, the quicker/better/longer one should sleep?? Yet 'over tired' is constantly given ad a cause of poor sleep in babies.

I would really like to understand this, does anyone know the answer?

I think once you're really tired you get that "wired" feeling (I do anyway) and you can't relax into sleep.

would also love to know the answer.

I can see it, I know how it works and how to avoid etc, but the biological mechanism is not illuminated for me...
