Embarrassed to admit I have only just realised.....

That my 4 week old DS is not going to fit in his moses basket for the 6 months that he needs to sleep next to me (neither would he stay in it with no bars) before going into his lovely big cot bed in his own room. There is no way his bed can fit in our room and a crib has equally low sides so what on earth does everyone else do? He's quite long already and I don't see him going another month in the basket, but presumably by 3 months he'd be too agile for a crib too?
I know I've had other things on my mind just latley but still mortified that this has only just occurred to me!

How big is he?

I used a travel cot in one house we couldn't fit the cot into our room.

My ds was a big baby and an early roller (15 weeks) Yes he outgrew his Moses basket and crib but it wasn't until he started pulling himself up at 5 months ish that the low sides were a problem.

We got a travel cot for our room as it fitted in ok. It was a graco one that had a bassinet level so much like a bigger crib. This worked really well. Ds was moved into his own room at 4.5 months as we started to disturb him when going to bed etc so he slept better on his own.

Ours went into their own room when they out grew the moses basket, as there was no room in our room for anything bigger.

piprabbit · 04/04/2012 13:05

Mine both outgrew their moses baskets by about 4 month. They were also starting to wriggle about dangerously. That was the point I moved them into their own rooms...in theory, in practice they tended to co-sleep with me (while DH moved to the spare room - lightweight that he is).

Thanks for your replies. Baby is 55cm long & can get himself onto his side already so I'm expecting a bit of a wriggler!
Just been looking at the Stokke sleepi, but think this may be a too expensive panic buy even by my standards.

Hi shires

I moved my DS into his own room when he outgrew Moses basket, as like you could t really afford to be buying an interim bed. He was 12 weeks and to be honest he sleeps way better in his own room anyway!!

harverina · 14/04/2012 20:39

IKEA do quite a small cot, not sure how much it costs in total including mattress but I'd imagine it'll be a fraction of the cost of a stokke. We had a similar problem and checked out the IKEA one but in the end we managed to fit my dd's big cot in our room.

candr · 14/04/2012 20:42

How about co-sleeping, would def not have wanted my DS in own room so early (although he is now 7m and still with us)
You can also get side car attatchments which are a small extension of your bed so they still have own space but don't know where you buy them.

fififrog · 14/04/2012 21:45

I also moved DD into cotbed in own room, in our case it was at 11.5 weeks after 3 weeks of awful sleep. Tried to cosleep as it was obvious she didn't like the basket, but all 3 of us hate cosleeping and after that failed attempt, do it only as a last resort when she's ill or we're away from home and she gets stressed for some reason.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 14/04/2012 21:52

Having the baby sleep in your room is to help prevent SIDS - it regulates their breathing. It stops them sleeping so deeply they forget to breathe - the fact they sleep better in their own room is why you shouldn't do it, not why you should.

Of course, it's one of those things where you have to weigh up the risk and make your own decision - it's just best if it's an informed decision.

Blame the hormones for not thinking about this before now Grin
