Taken side off cot to make a big bed and it's all gone wrong!

My DD 2.1 asked to go in a big bed like ours, so we got her a pillow and duvet and took the bars off the cot bed to make a bed. She was (and still is) very excited and loves her new big girls bed.

The first week was ok, a few nights she got out a couple of times but was easily put back to bed and settled. Last night and tonight is a nightmare though, and after an hour of doing a bit of super nanny and putting her back in bed, with her getting more and more hyper, I have resorted to putting the bars back on. She cried she didn't want them on, but then settled down and went to sleep straight away. I'm not sure if she feels more secure or just knows she can't get out so goes to sleep!

So I'm not sure what to do now, should I leave the bars on for a while and if so how long? Or do I keep persisting with trying to get her to stay in bed. Is it a bad thing putting bars up on a particularly bad night? My limit of patience is about an hour for bedtime!!! Any help or people with similar stories gratefully received.

I should perhaps add she's only just started sleeping through reliably (nightmare!) so maybe I have tried to move on too quickly, but thought if I got her settled going to bed in a bed I'll have cracked bedtimes!

We start by just taking one side off. And using a drop down bed guard on that side so that they still feel secure.

I've just taken one side off too, but haven't got a bed guard so perhaps that's something I can look at. Thanks for that.

Maybe you were too quick taking the sides off. More likely watching you put the sides on took her mind off not wanting to go to bed.

I suspect she'd simply had time to calm down by the time the job was done.

2 year olds are very good at getting totally hyper at bed time. Sometimes giving up tring to get them to sleep and doing something that means they're not getting much attention work wonders.
