How to cope with dummy falling out at night!

My 8 month old has now become dependent on dummy at sleep times. I always said from beg I wanted to avoid giving her dummy as i knew it was a hard and hassly to get them off with my experience of my son (now 3.5). Trting to get her off it is very hard, I tried a couple of nights this week during the day first at naps but she just cried and cried for an hour til i gave in..the problem i'm having with the dummy si that when it falls out at night she cries for it, although its on a strap pinned to her she still wont find it herself in the night..and my son and her are in same room now, and to avoid my son being woken up with her cries i immediatley go in to put dumy back in rather than wait and let her cry it out or give her chance to settle/find it..what do i do???

dummy in mouth, one in each hand

I used to put about 4 dummies in the cot at bedtime. Good chance of her or us finding one of them. I let them have dummies in bed until 2, but not in the daytime. wasn't too bad getting rid of them TBH.

We use a sleepy tot, it's a rabbit comforter that you attach the dummies too so they can always be found easy at night. I was sceptical about it working but it really does and means we now never have to go in during the night and scrabble around looking for lost dummies! We bought ours from amazon for around £12 :-)

Waffles how old is your LO? Our DS is 6 and a half months and dummy reliant too, and isn't able to reinsert his dummy reliably yet. Do you think the sleepytot would be suitable for that age?

grobagsforever · 19/03/2012 13:09

Ditch them now - the longer the leave it the harder it will be and also it's good to get rid before they want to start speaking.

Hi Oovoof, our LO is now 10 months but we introduced the sleepy tot at 6 months and like i said it worked pretty much from day 1, obviously still had a few times where we had to go in but on the whole the rabbit is fab!! We restrict the use to just naptime and bedtime and our LO is happy with this. Good luck!

We put four dummies in the cot. It does mean that she now needs one in her mouth and one in her hand at all times though...:)

RunningLatte · 22/03/2012 17:42

It seems four is the magic number!
Mine used to go to bed with four.
Mouth
Hand
Other hand
Spare.

I'm with grobags . Get rid now.
Yes the first few night will be a nightmare but it won't take long for her to learn to settle herself.
The longer you leave it the harder it gets!
