When is it safe for babies to sleep on their tummy?

My 5m old DS recently disovered how to roll from back to front but doesn't roll back yet. Last night he rolled at every opportunity and I found him on his front in the cot several times. Sometimes he was even lying flat on his face but would shuffle a bit after a while to get more air. Now, is it better to always turn him back to make sure he doesn't suffocate?

I never followed it, but the official advice is to put them down on their backs, and if they turn over, leave them. If they are strong enough to roll, they have enough strength to protect their airway.
To be fair, unless you are going to spend all night watching them, your not going to be able to stop him rolling over!
If your still worried, spend time in the day helping him roll back to tummy, and back again (there were 10 in the bed?)

I wouldn't worry about it, as long as he hasn't got a cot full of teddys or anything I think he'll be fine, he might prefer to sleep on his tummy. My 8mo dd does. When she was your ds' age I used to put her to sleep on her side cos she just would not go to sleep on her back and she use to move on to her tummy later in the night.

My DS has slept on front since birth, it seemed to help his colic and he was always asleep in the same room as us, he will sleep in pram etc on back but not if you try to 'put him down' He is able to move his head (should he be sick) and is able to breath fine, will be interesting to see if he rolls onto tummy to sleep when he is better at rolling.
