To everyone that has had a little trouble getting their babies to go to sleep in their cot will understand how triumphant I'm feeling...

It has only been two days however im happy none the less :) dd is 8mo and has ALWAYS fallen asleep in my arms and I mean ALWAYS unless where in the car. It takes no longer than that 10-15min to settle her with a little rock sometimes with a little cry mostly without, i always put her down in her cot for the first part of the night then when she wakes i bring her in with me which i like. Anyway the last few weeks I have been wondering how much longer I can do this for before it gets silly? Will I still be rocking her when she's two? CC is not for me at all and neither is the PUPD method. I heard of the gradual retreat and have known that when I'm ready this is what method woul be best for me. I did think I would really do it for a while though.

Anyway two days ago I was rocking dd and while she was happily cwtching in and getting ready to drop off I just right there on the spot put her in her cot. she immediately got excited and had a massive grin on her face and started flapping like she wanted to play and I thought oh god why did I do that. But I turned her on her belly, tucke her in and gave a gentle pat on the bum and she just put her head down and went to sleep! Shes done the same since!

It is still early days but I can not tell you how surprised I am that she just went to sleep! im thinking that if this carries on then I'll lessen the patting and start doing gradual retreat or whatever it's called properly! Im also wondering if she would have done this a while ago if I had of given her the chance?

A very happy mummy right now!

er1507, I always find that DC surprises me. Whenever I think he's ready for something, he screams blue murder (something as mundane as sitting in a different car seat). And the opposite applies as well-I thought he'd kick up a holy stink when I changed his nap times, or when I leave him to self-settle, and he just does it (mostly). I do think that maybe sometimes it's me holding him back (not to say that you are) cos I'm so obsessed with routine (and the slightest change freaks ME out, never mind him!). Well done, and hope it continues as smoothly..

Thank you ladies, it's going well so far, even for naps!

ebmummy I'm exactly the same! I've always had a routine from day 1 and I think I have actually held dd back. Never really given her the chance to go to sleep on her own cos I just assumed she wouldn't...a lesson has been learnt!
maybe she's ha it in her all along or maybe she's just ready. Either way im happy :) I'm sure a spanner will get thrown in the works at some point but I'll just have to deal with it when the time comes.
