When to stop daytime nap?

My 21 mo ds generally still has a daytime nap lasting anywhere between 50 mins to 2 and a quarter hrs!!! However he is starting to wake earlier and earlier, yesterday was 5.45 ( a problem we had when he was tiny!)

When do we stop him napping? Would this deter the early rising or just make him very over tired and so grumpy? There are days when he doesn't nap but not often. And often when he does nap he will sleep part of it in his cot and then fall asleep again on my lap after he's woken. I'd be grateful for any thoughts or advice!

Early rising is really common in toddlers and not necessarily anything to do with naps. Sometimes setting a later bedtime can work to get them to sleep in for longer, but some are just early birds no matter what. Some children drop their nap before two, others not for years. The range is huge Smile. I'd say he doesn't need a nap when he's no longer tired enough to sleep during the day.
