Cot Houdini Help

We need help...

18mth DC has just discovered that he can get out of the cot.

Last night was horrendous and today has been even worse.

Dc screams and screams at the door, wont lye down even though (and previously dc was content to) dc is so tired dc can?t really stand.

Dc?s a bit too young to reason with, though we have tried.

The room dc sleeps in is also a home office so we?ve tried to child proof it but there?s always ways dc can do damage to dc or the work, etc. Dc has demonstrated time and again that dc can convert everything into a danger.

What options have we got?
What did you do to stop them getting out of the cot?
If you bought a new bed what was it and how did you deal with the night walking and eventual screaming?

Sorry I don't have any solutions for you but didn't want your post to go unanswered. One thing that comes to mind is, can DC access the window by climbing on furniture etc? If so I would say that is the priority to reorganise. Can you put a playpen/gate thing across part of the room so that your DC cannot access the home office? Our Lindam one can be converted to a fence type arrangement but it does require drilling into the wall.

Tbh I'd rethink the home office/bedroom set up. It's just not going to be workable. My ds was exactly the same and it was about this age that we just put him in a bed. I made sure he had things that couldn't be harmful to him in there to play with, and he soon calmed right down at night. He's 3 now and still will get out of bed to have a little play after his story, but always snuggles himself bac in bed after about 10 minutes, and tbh he always has done since moving into his bed. He clearly just hated being contained in his cot and buggy and highchair

I also would re think the set up as at that age my DC was also in a bed, the room was made child safe, she had a few toys and quickly learned to stay/get into bed. She was quite safe to play around and we could hear her on the baby monitor.

Thanks.

Was hoping for help keeping dc in rather than when dc is out.

Would love to do a normal bed but dc thrashes and falls out when asleep, even in our double.

Toddler sleeping bag?

If he's that determined to escape then it's probably safer to put him in a bed anyway unfortunately. My ds was just the same, he was in a bed and much happier for it by 18 months.

canyou · 13/02/2012 20:55

I was like you but she fell out head first twice so safety had to come into it, we use the cot bed so down low and have the bed guards with only a little get in space at the end so far she has not fallen out.
Is it possible to drop the base of the cot any lower?
I do remember my GM saying she used to sit her DC on a mat and put the playpen over them upside down to trap them

canyou · 13/02/2012 20:58

ohbugrit my DC used to climb out whilst in the sleeping bag, no fear and no problem escaping while tied into it, the sleeping bag became a danger that it might get caught on something and she would get stuck in a dangerous position

My ds has just learnt to do this. He has a stairgate on the door. He has a duvet next to the stairgate. Once he's wailed a bit and fallen asleep, he gets moved back into bed. Cushions and duvets then on the floor as he rolls out during the night.
