Toddler crying out in sleep multiple times a night - Medised related or not?

Not sure if this should be on sleep or health board, but here goes ....

Just wondered if anyone else had this problem. DD is 16 months and having previously slept in cotbed in my room, has moved back to her own room. She sleeps in her bed, (converted to bed from cotbed) with a safety rail and has been there for around a week and a half. First couple of nights we had two or three night wakings, (not unexpected, given large leap from sharing to being in own room) where we checked on her after a couple of minutes of crying to find her sitting up and awake. A mixture of pick up/put down and general hanging around a bit till she dropped back off sorted it all out on those nights and then she slept uninterrupted for a few nights. Then she developed a cold, (runny nose and bit of a cough - temp only slightly up) and again we're having interrupted nights only this time she appears to be asleep but crying, (actually, it's more of a loud whimper) and this has been going on for past couple of nights. We've been giving her 5 mls of Medised at bedtime to help ease cold symptoms and help her sleep but if anything I'm wondering if the Medised is making her more unsettled. I tend not to go in if it's just a quick whimper or two followed by snoring sounds, but she's doing it many, many times a night, resulting in me not getting a lot of sleep. Any time I have checked on her, she's been fast asleep, her forehead has been cool and she's been breathing ok. She sleeps in pyjamas, in a grobag, and if it gets cold I usually put an extra blanket over her. So I guess I'm wondering - a) is it the Medised, (I have heard it can have an odd effect on some toddlers), b) is she just semi-waking up, feeling rough and instead of doing what we'd do, (think, yuk - I feel awful and then going back to sleep) she's voicing it the only way she knows how and then going back to sleep? Usually when she's poorly or teething, she'll wake right up and complain until someone attends to her, (just a couple of times). She's fine in herself and fairly bright on waking in the morning and in daytime and has, on average, an hour and a bit daytime nap between 2-ish and 3-ish.

Chances are, things will sort themselves out when the cold gets better but if I can avoid another night like last night, it would be a real bonus.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced similar behaviour using Medised.

Hiya I do use medised on my ds and haven t had any problems in fact i find it a godsend! But a friend of mine has had v similar experience to you with her dd she seems to think it put her into a unatural sleep and when she would go into the different stages of sleep she would wake(but not fully)she also said that when her dd would wake in the morning after she had medised that she would be v tired like she had been up half the night.
I would probably say that you are right and your dd will sort herself out in her own time and it probably is just a combination of being poorly and just generally being a toddler.

It sounds like disturbed sleep caused by her cold. I am sure it will stop once she is better. use ordinary calpol rather than medised?

Cheers Katycakes and Blu

I guess that is the easy way to find out - try bog standard Calpol instead! Certainly, the frequency of the outbursts would correspond to stages of sleep, so that would back up my initial theory.

Thanks again for your input.
