Frightened after sleep episode - help please?

Hi, I posted this in the behaviour section, and got a couple of great replies, but then found this section and thought it would be more appropriate to post here - hope that's ok:

My 3rd ds is 13wks plus 5 days old. Two days ago he rolled onto his tummy for the first time - twice. At night, ds3 sleeps for the first couple of hours in his bassinette and then after his first night feed will only go back to sleep if in our bed between us. Ds1 and 2 both co-slept with us so this in itself doesn't bother me too much, although I know it's not ideal. Last night, after we went back to sleep after ds3's first feed (not sure how long after), I was woken by loud snuffling noises, ds3 was lying FACE DOWN in the bed beside me, snuffling, head was neither to the left or right but straight down. I immediately rolled him over and his wee face was red, and he was sound asleep. I am now completely terrified, didn't sleep for the rest of the night, and doubt tbh I'll be able to sleep at all for fear that he'll suffocate. I suffered really badly with pnd after both ds1 and 2, but was doing brilliantly this time round. Now I just feel horrible and terrified and don't know what to do. I think he's young to have rolled over and wonder if this is why he struggled so much when he did it while asleep. All advice much appreciated. (sorry its so long).

My dds did this a couple of times-I can't remember how old they were though. It did scare me a bit but I assumed there wasn't much I could do about it and ! they were co-sleeping with me so i did wake and roll them back.I think most babies do this at some point, the problems arise if you put them on their fronts when they aren't able to roll back themselves.

sorry about strange exclaimation mark,am typing and drinking tea trying not to tip it on the keyboard.

What's worrying me is that he seemed to be struggling to breathe, and doesn't seem able to roll from tum to back, only from back to tum. Someone else suggested a positioner? Although I haven't seen one of these. I live in Oz, and it's 01:50 here, I'm now contemplating just staying awake tonight until I can maybe get one of these in the morning :(

Put a rolled up towel around him?

LilBlondePessimist · 21/01/2012 15:03

Isn't that supposed to pose a sids risk too? I'm totally flummoxed :(

I don't know, does it? I did it when DD was little & wanted her to feel snug & not wake up (haha).

I've seen it advised on here that you put the rolled up towel under the sheet... No idea how that fits with SIDS advice though I'm afraid.

Don't stay up all night op. (maybe too late depending on your time difference). At the very least get DP to take a shift.

Morning folks, I eventually slept between 03:30 and 05:00 and managed to get ds3 to go back into his bassinette after his first and second feed, although he was a bit unsettled (this in itself is amazing). I feel that he is less able to roll over in the bassinette as he has less room to manoeuvre, and even if he did, his mattress is probably slightly firmer than ours (although ours is pretty firm due to my back), but I'm going to have to find a proper resolution today.... think I will look for one of these positioners. We are going into Sydney today so does anyone know what shops sell these? Thanks all
