Has anyone used alimemazine tartrate (Vallergan) to break child's bad sleeping habits?

After nearly a year of really big sleeping issues, we went to the dr and were prescribed this for DD - the first set of doses didnt work terribly well, although it gave us all a little respite. We have been told to repeat with a higher dose this time, in a bid ot break the cycle of bad sleeping.

has anyone else used it, and did it work?

Pretty shocked that dr prescribed sleeping tablets for a baby. I understand how difficult it is for you as I am in the same boat, but drugging a young toddler seems extreme. Have you researched side effects?

oh sorry to mislead, she is 5.5, not a baby. The sleeping problems have been for about a year. I'm not keen on resorting to medication, but having only had a handful of nights that havent involved being woken up to 10 times a night, plus another child and a full time job to see to, it's very much a last resort.

Have you tried melatonin? A friend whose boy has ASD used it for a time with great results, but you have to get someone who's going to the states to bring it back, and of course it's not been through clinical trials (I don't think, could be wrong).

What are her sleeping habits olivo? Have you been to a sleep clinic with her? We went to a wonderful workshop with DS last year- it literally changed our life. Where are you in the UK? The lady who runs the workshop in the New Forest is brilliant.
Melatonin (I believe) is the hormone that helps to regulate sleep patterns. Your body naturally produces it to tell your body to sleep. The clinic we went to did not advocate using it- possibly as it isn't licensed, not sure. They did analyse the sleeping patterns of the children and recommend a strategy working in partnership with the parents to implement it.
How is your DD at bedtime?

haven't thought about melatonin, but I will do some research, thanks.

I have heard about a lady in the New Forest - is it a one day workshop? I am not in the UK, but occasionally visit Southampton so could feasibly go there. She is fine going to bed, but suffers from some sort of separation anxiety which means she comes into our room every time she wakes (and sometimes when she isnt awake).

We were prescribed alimemazine for our dd when she was 3ish and going through chemo, she wasn't sleeping, we weren't sleeping and all of us were suffering. She had the minutest amount(less than 2ml iirc) and it really helped her (and us). We only used it when desperate and not for more than one night out of 5/6. She is now a happy health 14 y.o. with no sleeping problems (or does not getting out of bed until 10 on a weekend count :o)
