does my dd sleep too much?

My dd's sleep pattern seems to have changed recently. She's 2yo and has always been a good sleeper (10-12 hrs over night plus 1hr nap during the day.

Recently though, she had been sleeping for 13 hrs overnight plus having a 2 hr nap in the afternoon. She's just got over a cold and I think she's having a height growth spurt and during the day she seems to have plenty of energy.

I know I'm lucky she sleeps so well, but when do I start worrying that she's sleeping too much? She eats ok, but refuses most meat and fish, so I worry that she's not getting enough iron / protein - could that be making her tired?

Any opinions gratefully revieved.

My DS (18 months) does that whenever he's under the weather (which is quite often at the moment, first winter at nursery). Last night (bless him, I needed it after a hard week) he slept through from 7.30pm-8.15am. Then he had a two-hour nap this afternoon. In the past few months we've had the odd occasion when he's slept for 14 hours overnight and 2 hours in the day. I just figure it's how his body deals with viruses. I wouldn't worry too much.

I was thinking this about my DS recently - he's 20 mOnths and regularly sleeps for 13-14 hours a night and then anywhere between 1.5-2.45 hours at lunch. Just as I started to think I should start to worry, his bed time got a little later and wake up time a little earlier, so back to about 12 at night and 2 during the day.

It goes in fits and starts and he's very active, happy and social - he just likes to sleep!

Think we should just be glad! My ds sleeps 12 - 13 hours night and one in day he is just over 2. Was just reading sleep deprivation thread and felt very very sorry for poor sleep deprived people. DH snores like warthog at times and worry a lot but this is nothing compared to what some people have to endure!

I had one of those babies/toddlers. 12 hours a night from really early on, no sleep training. Long afternoon nap.......... bliss. It was all down to my fab parenting of course GrinWink

Then DD2 arrived...............................

Unless you are concerned about her in other ways, speech, motor development etc - then really, I would just thank your lucky stars but keep quiet as other parents will hate you Grin #2 should you have one, will eff up everyone's sleep have implications for your lives whatever.

My dd is 7 and has always liked/needed at lot of sleep. Even now, at weekends, she is generally asleep by 7.30pm and doesn't wake up until 13 hours later! Bliss. I went to the GP when she was about 2 because she was sleeping for 13 hours a night, plus a 2 hour sleep. He checked her over and just said not to worry, and to enjoy getting a lie in ourselves!

change - am 30 weeks with DS2 and dreading the difficult 2nd baby syndrome thing everyone is telling me about. Even if (by some miracle) ds2 is sleep hungry too, the 7am waking (not to mention night feeds) will finish me off. We've started to think of 7.30 as an early morning!

changeforthebetter · 22/01/2012 07:17

Good luck with that Lotus. Are you and H/P good sleepers? Maybe genes will be on your side. Smile

I now have to get up for work 5 days a week at 5.30 which suits DD2 down to the ground Hmm

Jamdoughnutfiend · 22/01/2012 08:25

Just to reassure those with number 2 on the way, DD2 is sleepier than DD1 was. She is 6 months now and sleeps 3.5 hours in the day and from 6.45-7.30 (later if i let her). So it is possible to have 2 sleepy ones

Thanks everyone for your reassurance - developmentally she's comparable to her peers, so I'll just thank my lucky stars for a good sleeper (after another 2 1/2 hour nap again this afternoon!)
