Ok,so this has been bothering me for a while.
My 14mo DS has always been a very poor sleeper.
He wakes 2+ times a night so we co-sleep for half the night.
The worry is,when he wakes he's screaming (not every time but definitely more often than not)
His eyes are open,he's sat up and just now when I've gone in he doesn't want a cuddle, back arching! Its like he's seriously pissed off/scared....
Its worse when he's in his room. But even when he wakes up next to us he cries....(however this will only last a few minutes until he's woken up properly)
Do all toddlers wake this way?
It seems like a fairy tale when i hear of other little ones waking up happy and playing in their cot until the parent goes in and gets them.
Is it nightmares? disorientation?
Has anyone else experienced this?

Dd used to be the same, 4 now, still doesn't sleep well but doesn't shout anymore. Night light helps.

its definitely like he's in a wailing trance,we've discovered a loud clap brings him out of it....
Poor little chap...but what else can we do???

Maybe it's night terrors.

I thought of night terrors too. They haven't properly woken up, they're still in a halfway house between waking and sleeping. Like most things it is just a stage that they go through.

Thanks ladies
I've just done a bit of research on night terrors and it advises to gently waken and settle just before the time it usually happens.
So we plan to do this before we go to bed. Historically we've always been a bit cautious about interrupting his sleep for fear of making things worse but this is worth a try

The other theory my DH has is that the rooms haunted as,pre-baby,he once saw a cat with orange eyes in the room....Hmm

It definitely sounds like night terrors to me. DD had the same thing at around the same age, and DS (15 months) has started to get them too.
