How to get baby sleeping in his cot...

Ds is nearly two monts old and sleeping pretty well in a Moses next to our bed. He goes to bed between 8 and 9 downstairs in basket then we take him up with us about 10. He generally wakes for two feeds then breakfast at 8.

The thing is he is rapidly outgrowing his Moses and I'm starting to think about getting him in his cot in his own room, very close to our room...ideally I wouldn't want him in his own room yet but there is no way we can get his cot in our room, there just isn't the space.

Has anyone got any tips for when we make the transition from Moses in our room to cot in his room.. Ive a feeling it won't be easy!

When I moved my daughter into the cot in her own room I started out by putting the Moses basket into her cot for her to sleep in. Did that for about a week so she could get used to the unfamiliar surroundings with the familiarity of the basket. She then transitioned to the cot quite happily.

Try putting the Moses basket inside the cot for a few days. He'll might feel secure in his basket whilst getting used to his new environment. That's what we did with DD Smile

Thanks that's such a good idea! Will definitely try that when we make the transfer...

I started putting my son in it during daytime naps and felt a bit more confident with it. He soon got used to it

We had the cot in our room first.

I put dd in her own cot in her room when she was 10wks, I used to put her down for naps in there 1st then a week later at nights too, she was fine, try putting a top or something at the top of the cot so Ds will be comforted by being able to smell you a bit.

Thanks ladies, again, great idea x

You could sleep in his room on the floor for the first few nights whilst he gets used to it, then move back into your own room.

With my DS, I rolled up towels and put them under the fitted sheet either side of him to make the cot a bit more 'enclosed' like his Moses basket, then removed them as he got used to the cot. I think some might say this would be a SIDS risk but I felt if the towels were not loose and under the sheet it would be ok - you may want to look into it first, though!

Yes I did that when he first went in his Moses because he was so tiny in it! Can't believe how fast he's grown!

Will try that as well ta x

I'm doing this soon too.

My plan is to play with DS a bit everyday in his bedroom (it's a new flat so he's never been in it) so he knows its a safe room.

Then I'll put him in his cot a few times when awake and again play with him and sing songs so he associates cot with nice stuff.

Then moses basket in cot to sleep.

Then just cot!

Hope it works!

They suddenly look tiny when you put them the the cot, with their feet touching the end. Grin

If you really don't want him out of your room - we have had DS2 in a travel cot in our room since he outgrew moses basket. I do have to squeeze past it but it takes up less room than the cot and we moved the bed a bit over (so DH has a tiny gap his side too).

We initially did it because the cot is still occupied and I didn't want DS2 in a separate room waking DS1. But it has been much nicer for night feeds than scuttling into another room in the cold. We are moving him out next week, he is 7mo. He is currently having a nap in the cot. I think 2mo are pretty flexible and won't notice much.

Yes ideally, I'd like to keep him in my room a bit longer, we could try using a travel cot, we are just so pushed for space we already have to squeeze around the bloody Moses!! Will keep him in Moses as long as poss and see how we feel then... Maybe if he just slows down his growth for a week or so he can stay in it a bit longer!!

I think you'll probably have quite an easy move. We moved our daughter at 4 months old because she was disturbed by my partner's snoring and she slept much better!!

Shushshessleeping · 17/01/2012 17:26

We had our DS in it for his naps first as someone else suggested. We also put the same sheets under him so the smell was the same for a while until he was used to it. I also introduced a sleep toy, so he saw it everytime he was expected to sleep. Works sometimes but other times he just laughs at it.

I moved my 4 mth old at the weekend - made no difference at all, except now I have to get up for night feeds Hmm
